The successful candidate for this role will handle the day to day legal functions for unscripted television development and production. The candidate will be responsible for all legal matters related to production including structuring, drafting and negotiating a wide range of production-related agreements, including location, access, appearance, vendor and license agreements, handling pre-broadcast clearance review and advising on clearance issues.
Responsibilities will include:
• Provide production legal support to the two Counsels of Business & Legal Affairs and other executives in the department.
• Negotiate and drafting development and production agreements (e.g., on-camera participant agreements, independent contractor agreements, format licenses, venue and location releases, and other development shopping and attachment agreements.).
• Manage a range of business affairs and production-related legal matters.
• Participate in legal kick-off calls and coordinate distribution of production agreements internally and to third party production companies.
• Analyze and interpret contracts and provide thoughtful legal advice on potential risks and issues in a wide range of legal areas, including intellectual property/copyright.
• Interface with production personnel/crew and executives.
Requirements:
• 1 -2 years' experience in a business and legal affairs television production environment at a network, agency or studio preferred
• JD degree from top-tier law school.
• Member of California State Bar.
• Understanding and knowledge of television industry agreements, contract law and intellectual property rights, demonstrated ability to conduct legal research, analysis and reasoning.
• Works with an appropriate sense of urgency with sensitivity to the demands and deadlines of productions operating simultaneously across multiple time zones.
• Ability to prioritize a high volume of projects.
• Strong computer skills (including Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel); experience with creating and maintaining legal document management systems required.
• Excellent drafting, communication (written and verbal), interpersonal and organizational skills.
The successful candidates will also possess the following:
• Passion for television production.
• Hands-on production experience.
• Experience working with all levels of broadcasters and distributors and on pilots and first-time series.
• Ability to work independently, multi-task under pressure, and manage a high-volume workload efficiently.
