APA is looking for a Business Affairs Executive to add to Business Affairs group.
The position will report to the Executive Vice President, Business Affairs and work with agents across all departments of the agency negotiating television (scripted and alternative), theatrical, new media, music, live stage/concerts, licensing and branding deals.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
This role will provide dealmaking services to structure, negotiate and document all deals across the agency.
The business affairs executive will handle the negotiation of above-the-line (writer, producer, on-camera talent, etc.), musical performer, live stage/concerts, rights acquisition, and other related deals and will work closely with agents across all departments and other representatives on the respective team to assist in finalizing agreements and dealing with development, production, performance and/or execution issues as they arise. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to effectively negotiate, interact and maintain relationships with agents, managers, outside attorneys, production company/studio executives, network/platform executives and others in the entertainment community, and be able to efficiently communicate status and tradeoffs with other members of the team with an understanding of creative, production, marketing, accounting, finance and legal issues important to the studios, platforms and venues with whom deals for clients are being made.
Perform additional responsibilities as assigned and directed by EVP, Business Affairs.
Qualifications/Requirements:
A comprehensive working knowledge of television, new media, svod and theatrical industry agreements, guild and union regulations (DGA, SAG-AFTRA, WGA, #839), contract law and intellectual property rights (as applicable to the entertainment industry) is required, along with excellent drafting, negotiation, communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, organizational and computer skills. Comfort analyzing issues of copyright, contract, labor and tax law.
Must be able to manage a varied, high-volume workload efficiently and smoothly, operate autonomously within corporate parameters, and remain cool and levelheaded in pressurized situations. Proven ability to think independently and creatively to close complex or basic deals quickly within parameters. A successful candidate is expected to be a team player able to work collaboratively with colleagues in this department and across the agency, build strong internal and external relationships, effectively advise team members/clients under time-sensitive conditions and generate client satisfaction through strategic thinking and risk analysis. A business minded executive with good common sense and judgment, strong interpersonal skills and a desire to thrive in a fast-paced business environment.
This role will be located in Beverly Hills and will report to the Head of Business and Legal Affairs.
You must be enthusiastic, enjoy working hard and getting things done, and demonstrate sound judgment even in ambiguous situations.
Basic Qualifications:
+ Bachelor Degree and JD or JD/MBA, with active membership in the California State Bar preferred;
+ Minimum of 5 years of experience working in transactional entertainment law with a strong preference for 4+ years of experience in television development and production. A thorough understanding of entertainment industry customs and practices with 4-7+ years in entertainment deal making, representing or working for a major scripted production company, studio or network/channel or platform or entertainment law firm;
+ In-depth knowledge of the television industry with a proven track record of problem solving legal expertise;
+ Deep understanding of media business models with familiarity with a wide variety of deal templates and the ability to understand and respond to new business models in a changing business environment;
+ Deadline driven with the ability to prioritize a heavy workload;
+ Excellent negotiating skills and a strong strategist who is able to present, develop and guide negotiations through to closure;
+ Superior influencing skills and will be able to gain the respect of, and build a rapport with, multiple constituencies, internally and externally;
+ Persuasive communicator with a vision; proven ability to self-motivate, work independently as well as collaboratively;
+ Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact with a range of personalities and styles to establish effective relationships at all levels of the organization;
+ Superior organizational and communication skills, exceptional ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment; and
+ You must be enthusiastic, enjoy working hard and getting things done, and demonstrate sound judgment even in ambiguous situations.
