National Geographic Senior Resident, Photography (Project Hire)
Job Summary:
National Geographic seeks experienced leaders in visual journalism from diverse backgrounds for a rigorous year-long employment opportunity.
The Senior Resident, Photography will work alongside the Deputy Director of Photography and will report directly to the Director of Visuals and Immersive Experiences. They will work directly with photographers, text editors, and designers to develop, pitch, assign, produce, and edit visual for print and digital platforms. The Senior Resident will also gain hands-on experience recruiting and nurturing diverse photographic talent; managing the deadlines and budgets for all editorial photographic content; and coaching a team of photo editors across multiple content verticals.
This is a tremendous leadership opportunity. Prior management experience and a demonstrated ability to collaborate across teams to produce journalistically rigorous and visually compelling content is a must. The Senior Resident may also be called upon to represent the photographic leadership of National Geographic Media both within and outside of the company.
This is a Project position and employment will continue on this Project (at the company's sole discretion), and in no event shall extend past the completion of the Project.
Responsibilities:
The position requires a sophisticated visual aesthetic, strong editing skills, and the ability to commission and research photo content reflective of National Geographic's photographic standards.
The Senior Resident, Photography will assist in managing all facets of production: researching, developing, and pitching story ideas; commissioning photographers; producing long-term projects; and editing and publishing stories across all platforms. He/she will also assist in managing the editorial photographic staff.
They will cultivate and maintain relationships in the photo industry; and seek and recruit photographic talent to National Geographic.
Basic Qualifications:
• Minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience
• Minimum of 3 years of management experience with demonstrated ability to collaborate across teams
• Excellent visual taste; extensive knowledge of photography and photographers
• Keen editorial sensibility, and ability to make editorial judgments/superior news judgment
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate with creative minds and work across departments
• Ability to work independently, and to problem solve creatively
• Experience in digital journalism and proficiency in social media is a plus
Required Education
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
Preferred Education
• MA degree in journalism, photography, or another related field preferred
