Job Description THE ROLE: Sr. Manager, Global Rights: Rights Production This is an exciting new role which will manage aspects of the Global Rights (Rights Production) focusing on the expansion of A E Network's Internal Productions. Position is responsible for providing legal and rights guidance to internal production groups, including A E's new unscripted studio Category 6 Media and Six West Media group, as well as additional creative teams in Post-Production, Marketing, and Digital Media Production on day-to-day production related matters and overseeing complex matters in the areas of legal analysis, rights compliance, risk, issue spotting, and ongoing support. This position develops solutions and strategies serving as the rights liaison between Global Rights and internal production units for all rights-related matters including in-the-field questions/review, post-production, creative solutions, and rights bible submission. The position requires a significant amount of rights advisement coupled with decisive problem-solving skills in a fast-paced production environment. Our client groups expect and trust that our services respect and accord with applicable rights, and it is this role's responsibility to ensure that the production aspects and requests are handled seamlessly to ensure compliance with rights. MORE ABOUT WHAT YOU'LL DO: Partner with the internal production units to ensure rights compliance at every stage from in-the-field through rights bible submission. Lead day-to-day production rights matters including providing legal and rights specific guidance to clearance freelancers, reviewing releases and ad hoc drafting/negotiating of licenses. Negotiate deals with rights holders including IP owners of footage/photo/music synchronization/ master recording/talent/other elements, etc. Trouble shoot problematic licensors on clearing any hurdles to acquire rights. Advise and direct rights & clearance personnel working within internal production units. Review content and be able to independently advise creative teams on risk, rights issues and other issues that could be problematic to exhibit such content; suggest alternatives. Develop and strengthen cross-functional relationships with Internal Production, IT, and Legal teams (Content Risk Attorneys, Programming Attorneys and Insurance) to maximize distribution and minimize risk. Oversee and collaborate with external departments on the rights research and analysis as it relates to producing long form or cut-down content from archival programming, licensing new content and deliverables compliance. Perform deep legal analysis/review on a variety of production related agreements including music, footage, talent, appearance, location, and material releases. Focus on enhancing the relationship with our client groups as we provide outstanding rights solution within systems. Counsel business partners and make decisions that have both legal and business impacts. Educate, present to and communicate with production personnel at all levels including senior executives. YOUR STORY: [ BEHAVIORS] (what you need to have) Required Education: BA/BS Degree, JD optional. Minimum of 10 years working experience with a proven track record of negotiation of media rights, performing legal analysis, assessing risk, working with production creatives, and working within systems. Solid experience managing personnel in the production process. Must have direct experience working on the day to day process of content production in either a production company, other content creation company or within a Broadcast or Cable Network that produced content internally. Must have a strong production/legal background with experience in reviewing all forms of rights acquisition and production related agreements. Experience working with legal risk, and collaborating with legal risk attorneys is strongly preferred. Must have experience in researching rights, generating reports, and interpreting legal rights data. Specific experience working in Jaguar System 7 Universal Rights Management and/or FilmTrack rights tracking or similar rights management software is a plus. There is a high level of decision-making in this position and a high level of productivity and accuracy expected, as is an ability and willingness to work within a team environment. The position is client-facing and service-oriented, so excellent interpersonal and written communication skills are essential. Must possess the ability to work effectively and collaboratively cross-functionally, think practically and be solution-oriented. Must have strong-multitasking skills and have extensive experience with various troubleshooting methods in a fast-paced environment.
