Job Title: Director of Entertainment and Reality, Elephant House Studios
Department: Production
Reporting To: Vice President, Elephant House Studios
Location: Hawley Crescent, Camden
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:
• Elephant House Studios, the in house production arm of Channel 5, produces nearly 120 hours of television each year for Channel 5, MTV, Comedy Central and Viacom. We are beginning to pitch to the wider UK market, building relationships with and creating ideas for all major broadcasters
• We are looking to hire a senior programme maker to develop and oversee all of the programmes and series produced by Elephant House Studios in the Entertainment and Reality genres
• The role will need to grow the slate significantly, whilst also working as the senior creative lead on the programmes we currently produce in these genres, including the returning series and key brand “Make or Break?”
• Able to appoint and manage senior creatives, the chosen candidate will become a key part of the Elephant House Studios management team, working closely with the Vice President to ensure we continue to grow. The Director of Entertainment and Reality will work closely with the Director of Factual, with the two genre heads combining to hit shared targets
• You’ll be able to help appoint and work closely with the development team to manage and grow existing brands, create and grow new series and specials, and build and lead relationships with on and off screen talent
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
• The management of a range of programmes, often launching and running multiple series and/or specials simultaneously, and prioritising the needs of the slate at all times
• Delivery of series and specials on time and on budget, whilst meeting the editorial aspirations of the department and the broadcasters
• Hiring and management of great programme makers, working with the EHS management team and the Channel(s) to ensure the people we hire are best suited to the needs of the commissions
• Management of the relationships with the broadcasters, building and maintaining strong working relationships with a range of Commissioning Editors and Channel Controllers
• Hiring and working with the in-house development team to ensure the strongest ideas are being generated at all times, honed to the needs of the Channels
• The ability to work from the development stage to delivery within the confines of the tariffs available, helping the production management team ensure that the funding we receive reflects the programme we can deliver
• Overseeing the production and aiding the development of ideas which can be sold internationally, and/or which have opportunities for commercial exploitation
EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE:
• Significant experience working as an Executive Producer and/or above in the television industry, making a broad range of programmes and series within the Entertainment and Reality genres on a variety of budgets for different broadcasters
• A strong and preferably proven working knowledge of the demands and aspirations of Channel 5 and Viacom, both in the UK and Internationally
• A wide range of contacts at key broadcasters in the UK, and (if possible) abroad
• Experience of developing and managing large scale formats, including (if possible) both location based reality series, and studio based entertainment
• The ability to identify and attract great people to work in our development team, then helping them create ideas and formats which meet the requirements of the broadcasters
• A good knowledge of the off-screen talent market, and the ability to attract and hire the very best programme makers
• Strong relationships with, and a good working knowledge of on-screen talent and their agents, so that we can develop and grow more brands with relevant talent attached
• A flexible approach to budget management, and a proven ability to deliver great content on sometimes challenging tariffs
• A proven ability to work across multiple shows and/or series simultaneously, balancing the needs of each show separately and yet delivering all projects on time and on budget
• A knowledge of international markets, helping us ensure the programmes we make are sellable and lend themselves to commercial exploitation
