The Librarian provides operational management of the library resources and personnel to support the AFI Conservatory – an accredited MFA degree granting institution. This includes, but is not limited to acquisition and processing of materials, providing access to books and other collection material; organizing and maintaining the Conservatory archives and library management standards to comply with all regulatory agencies.
Principal Duties:
Develop and maintain a strategic plan for AFI’s Louis B. Mayer Library, Conservatory archive and online resources.
Supervise the personnel and operation of the library, archives and computer lab.
Administer the library collections, including books, periodicals, moving image assets, online resources, reference materials, special collections and archives, as well as films made by AFI Conservatory Fellows.
Develop, manage and oversee enforcement of library policies for collection development, access, weeding, and archival preservation. In addition, the Librarian directs processes for acquisitions and donations, cataloging and preparation of library materials, and the administration of the library’s online circulation system (OPAC).
The Librarian will provide instructional workshops on research tools and techniques for faculty and Fellows as appropriate.
Work collaboratively with faculty, staff and Fellows; operate efficiently with multiple priorities in a dynamic, diverse academic environment.
Must demonstrate commitment to the profession by keeping abreast of current trends and developments in the field of library and archives management; remain active professionally and through service; represent the interests of the AFI and the AFI Conservatory in related and advantageous internal, local, regional, national and international organizations and associations.
Create prepare and present written and oral reports on library activities, programs and operations and coordinate library information functions both with the AFI Conservatory and other internal departments.
Preparation and delivery of content in relation to the library for AFI online sources as required;
Staff the circulation desk for 1-2 hours per day, as needed, and will act as the primary point of contact for research reference questions.
Experience/Skills Required:
Master’s Degree in Library Science required.
Minimum three years of special or academic library experience, including supervisory and administrative responsibilities.
Familiarity with library operations, cataloging and online resources.
Minimum two years archival management experience, or comparable professional training within the field of archival management.
Working knowledge of collection or digital assets management software and on-line public access cataloging systems.
Superior database management and computer skills, with expertise in Word and Excel.
Knowledge of film history and production desirable.
Excellent management, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
Problem-solving skills are essential.
Ability to deal courteously and effectively with staff and outside consultants.
Ability to work creatively, collaboratively and effectively, both as a team member and independently, and to promote teamwork among colleagues.

Commitment to professional issues, demonstrated through strong interest in local or national committee work, research, publication, etc., in manuscripts and archives.
Must be able to lift boxes up to 25 lbs and participate in moving items up and down stairs (archive materials are located on the floors above the library).
Must be able to work some evenings and weekends
