Department Overview: The Legal and Business Affairs Department provides legal and business advice and support to all WGBH projects and departments. The department drafts or reviews all contracts and deal memos, reviews all programs and print materials for defamation and rights clearances, handles all insurance matters for the Foundation, and, if necessary, litigates claims brought by or against WGBH.
Position Overview: The Paralegal/Contract Specialist in this position reports to several attorneys in the WGBH Legal and Business Affairs Department. Under their supervision, the Paralegal/Contract Specialist will: draft legal documents, contracts, memos and cover letters; edit standard documents; proofread; research background project information by reviewing contract files, and compiling information from clients. The Paralegal/Contract Specialist should be able to work independently in handling a variety of legal and business issues, including, as requested, negotiating agreements with third parties. He or she will also respond to legal and business questions or, as appropriate, refer to supervising attorney. Responsible for maintaining a working environment that leverages the potential and diversity of the department’s entire staff. Requirements: A college degree is required. A minimum of three years paralegal or relevant/related experience, and the following skills are required: strong reading, writing, verbal, and analytical skills; excellent negotiating, organization and communication skills, including demonstrated writing ability and the proven capability to set priorities and to meet deadlines. Familiarity with MS Word required. General production knowledge desired, but not required. Experience with intellectual property, copyright law, and/or rights & permissions, a plus. Must be able to work cooperatively with creative artists and business people in this fast paced environment.
