MANAGING EDITOR
The Position:
Managing Editor of a forthcoming web-based lifestyle magazine covering Music, Style, Sports & Business via consistently updated original HD video content and professional blogging. The primary responsibility of this post will be managing the blogs and creating the bulk of the content found there. Your responsibilities would also include some assisting with the identification of stories for video coverage and light organizing of shoots involving public figures. (Video creation will be managed by a colleague).
The Role:
We’re looking for an editor that is currently working in – or ready to make the jump – into web editorship, bringing to the table not only the skill sets demanded by a print publication, but the ability to roll his/her sleeves up and create exemplary content while electing and overseeing content creators and creation and managing the tone of the endeavor as a whole. We’re looking for someone who – at the very least – has a working knowledge of three out of four of the following categories, and a superior knowledge of at least one:
Music - Mainly urban with some understanding/interest in cutting-edge rock and sophisticated pop.
Style - Primarily trendsetting and innovative Fashion, Art, Design, Travel & Leisure, Fine Dining, Architecture, Technology, etc.
Sports - Largely football, basketball and baseball, but a good sense of the field overall allowing for knowledgeable writing about ancillary sports/events when relevant.
Business - Working understanding of the economics of small business and/or knowledge of economic structure of businesses in the entertainment field (Music, Movie, etc), with an interest in both.
The Editor will be responsible for ensuring that a significant number of relevant and worthwhile stories are published daily across these four sections, with a higher importance placed on creating original content rather than mainstream, repetitive material. The site will create ample opportunity for a diligent Editor to access professionals and celebrities across a diverse cultural spectrum and to create new content frequently with their participation. The responsibility of the Editor lies in identifying fresh and interesting ways to cover cultural phenomena. The main focus is managing the relationships we introduce in order to create content based on the identified vision and, ultimately, creating that content in a professional and timely fashion. While overseeing the creation of content by any ancillary staff you deem necessary, the Editor is also responsible for managing within a pre-identified budget.
The Editor will work closely with staff to ensure that coverage falls within the lines of the site’s mission and that it meets that artist’s desired tone, but will be expected to manage all written content directly.
Necessary Skills:
• Working knowledge of three out of four of the following categories, and a superior knowledge of at least one: Music, Style, Sports, Business
• Ability to identify and manage a team of freelance writers
• Ability to strike a colorful voice in your writing
• Ability to work within an identified tone and to ensure that all content adheres to the same tone
• Light knowledge of HTML and ability to upload content via a simple online administration tool (after training)
• Professional knowledge of grammar
