We have an opening for a Systems Engineer. This position will be located in New York, NY.
Summary:
The Systems Engineer (SE) is responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of infrastructure systems hardware and software. This individual will install all new hardware, systems and software for networks, as well as configure and maintain network services, equipment and devices. This individual is responsible for handling the escalation of issues from the Service Desk. This individual also participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the organization.
Responsibilities:
- Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all infrastructure resources, systems and key processes.
- Reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs.
- Ensure that all vital data is being backed up and verified on corporate managed servers.
- Provide support to service desk for escalated tickets that can't be resolved at lower Tier levels.
- Create and maintain documentation for operational, configuration, installation or other infrastructure related procedures.
- Weekly performance and availability reporting to support capacity planning and provide visibility to management.
- Maintain data center environment which may include cabling and environmental monitoring.
- Working knowledge of storage technologies.
o This objective may include but is not limited to: advantages and disadvantages of different storage types; local (SATA, SCSI, IDE); NAS; SAN; fibre channel; iSCSI; NFS; FC HBA and FC switches; iSCSI hardware
o Hardware and software RAID technologies such as RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 10 and combinations.
o File systems and network storage protocols: SMB, CIFS, AFP: ATA; SAS, SATA, SCSI basic disk; dynamic disk; mount points; mounting a virtual hard disk; Windows DFS (distributed file systems); optical disks
- Server Performance Management
o Major server hardware components.
o This objective may include but is not limited to: memory; disk; processor; network; 32 / 64 bits; removable drives; graphic cards; cooling; power usage; ports
o Performance monitoring practices such as the effect of network, CPU, memory and disk; creating a baseline; Performance Monitor; Resource Monitor; Task Manager; Event Viewer, performance counters, SNMP
o Logging, auditing levels and alerting. Log aggregation systems. Network, systems and application monitoring with products like SolarWinds NPM.
- Server Maintenance
o Understand business continuity and high-availability systems.
o This objective may include but is not limited to: backup and restore; disaster recovery; clustering; AD restore; folder redirection; data redundancy; uniterruptible power supply (UPS)
o Updating and patch management using centralized systems like WSUS, Altiris, SCCM.
o Manage monitoring systems and report on systems utilization and availability.
o Install, diagnose, repair and maintain infrastructure servers and networking equipment
o Work with the I.T. groups to provide assistance in the planning and deployment of approved projects.
o Manage Active Directory infrastructure including OU's, group policies, replication and disaster recovery.
o Understand all aspects of server installation, network operating systems, Windows core versus full, domain controllers purpose, functions and services, RODC's.
- Working knowledge of remote access and vpn.
o This objective may include but is not limited to: remote assistance; SCCM remote administration tools; Remote Desktop Services; RD Gateway; VPN; IAS, SSL VPN, Checkpoint VPN client.
- Working knowledge of file and print services.
o This objective may include but is not limited to: local printers; network printers; printer pools; web printing; web management; driver deployment; file, folder, and share permissions vs. rights; DFS, auditing; print job management.
- Working knowledge of server, desktop and application virtualization.
o This objective may include but is not limited to: virtualization modes; VHDs; virtual memory; virtual networks; snapshots and saved states; physical to virtual; virtual to physical. Citrix products like XenApp, XenDesktop, Receiver. VMWare ESx. Microsoft Hyper-V, AppV, AppDev
- Planning for name resolution and IP addressing. May include but is not limited to: internal and external naming strategy, naming resolution support for legacy clients, naming resolution for directory services and IP addressing scheme.
- Planning for Remote Desktop Services. May include but is not limited to: Terminal Services, licensing, Remote Desktop Services, Remote Assistance and SCCM remote tools.
- Design Active Directory forests and domains. May include but is not limited to: forest structure, forest and domain functional levels, intra-organizational authorization and authentication, schema modifications.
- Design the Active Directory physical topology. May include but is not limited to: placement of servers, site and replication topology, printer location policies.
- Design the Active Directory administrative model. May include but is not limited to: delegation, group strategy, compliance auditing, group administration, organizational structure.
- Design the enterprise-level group policy strategy. May include but is not limited to: group policy hierarchy and scope filtering, control device installation, authentication and authorization.
- Design and implement public key infrastructure. May include but is not limited to: certificate services, PKI operations and maintenance, certificate life cycle management.
- Plan, implement and maintain systems that provide business continuity, high-availability and disaster recovery. Clustering, Network load-balancing, Network Interface card teaming, network circuit bonding, LACP, STP.
- Design for software updates and compliance management. May include but is not limited to: patch management and patch management compliance, Microsoft Update and Windows Update, SCCM, security baselines, system health models.
- Design the operating system virtualization strategy. May include but is not limited to: server consolidation, application compatibility, virtualization management and placement of servers.
- Design for data management and data access. May include but is not limited to: data security, data accessibility and redundancy, data collaboration.
Requirements / Education:
- 4 year degreed required.
- Minimum 8 years of hands on experience in the field of information technology.
- Thorough knowledge of networking essentials.
- Strong verbal and written communications skills and the aptitude to communicate with all levels of management.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to be proactive in problem solving.
- Must be able to work independently in an extremely fast-paced environment.
- Ability to multitask with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Able to lift up to 20lbs.
