Digital Arts Instructor
Position Summary
The Digital Arts Instructor reports to the Director of Upper School. This position holds primary responsibility for instructing high school students in the fields of filmmaking and video production, and instructing middle school students (Grades 6-8) in digital photography and filmmaking. This position requires knowledge of digital photography, video editing, sound editing, broadcast equipment, and lighting. Must have a working knowledge of Adobe Premiere, Adobe Photoshop, and Apple Final Cut Pro 7. The student lab uses Adobe Creative Cloud; thus, any working knowledge of the following is desirable: Lightroom, Acrobat and Illustrator.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Instruct high school and middle school students in the use of Premiere, Photoshop and other software
• Provide individual and small group instruction adapting the curriculum to the needs of students with varying abilities
• Submit weekly lesson plans to the division directors
• Communicate with division directors and parents on student progress
• Evaluate student performance and growth in knowledge by preparing regular progress reports
• Evaluate students in the proper care and use of video production and photography equipment
• Ensure that video production and photography equipment is maintained, inventoried and that repair requests are made in a timely manner
• Demonstrate to students the proper operation and use of video production and broadcast equipment
• Maintain the storage and organization of all digital assets, including student work
• Serve as Yearbook Moderator, acting as direct liaison with contracted outside yearbook company; and in conjunction with division director and admin staff, establish and coordinate with yearbook committee and administer all yearbook deliverables, manage yearbook production deadlines and scheduling, cover photography of school events, and work with photography students for same
• Other duties as assigned
Course Descriptions:
Intro to Video Production
This quarter-long course introduces students to the basics of video and audio controls for live broadcast. Students facilitate a school broadcast four days a week in conjunction with the lower, middle and upper school students and staff. Students also learn basics about the composition and post-production of image and sound using basic software such as iMovie. The instructor is required to teach the students how to operate all production equipment and associated software.
Intermediate Video Production
This year-long course is for students who wish to expand their video production skills. Throughout the academic year, students complete a variety of projects that build upon prior skills from the introductory class. Students collaborate with peers to create multiple projects from script to screen. The instructor teaches students how to operate all video and audio recording production equipment as well as associated post-production software in the Adobe Creative Cloud suite. The instructor will also be required to present on a variety of aspects from film history.
Advanced Video Production
This year-long course is for Junior or Seniors who have successfully completed Intermediate Video Production and who would like to expand their video production skills. Students are assigned various projects utilizing advanced camera and audio equipment with a greater focus on non-fiction filmmaking. Students learn how to operate all video and audio recording production equipment as well as associated post-production software. The instructor will also be required to present on a variety of aspects from documentary and film history.
Digital Photography
This year-long course introduces students to the automatic and manual functions of DSLR cameras. Students will take photos on and off campus with school cameras and select and edit final images within Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. Students will learn how to evaluate and critique their own images as well as images from throughout the history of photography. (Students will also be required to contribute campus photos to the school's archive for potential inclusion in the school's yearbook and promotional imagery. Students will collaborate with the instructor to design, lay out, and write caption text for the school's yearbook.)
