Summary:
Under the supervision of the Director of Field Operations, the Field Manager is responsible for supporting the overall upkeep and maintenance practices for the playing field and surrounding landscape areas. This position supervises all part-time employees assigned to the Grounds Department. The Field Manager is responsible for supporting the effort to provide a high quality field that complies with the specifications and safety standards set forth by Major League Baseball (MLB), the Washington Nationals, and the Director of Field Operations. The ideal candidate shall be a self-motivated, hardworking individual that is passionate about Sports Field Management as well as the game of baseball.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Manage the recruitment, training, and supervision of seasonal part-time employees as well as candidates for our internship program.
• Document department operating expenses and provide necessary financial tracking information to support the management of the assigned operating budget.
• Manage accurate, current, and complete records of all pesticide and fertilizer applications.
• Supervise all day-to-day activities that are required of maintaining a field at a professional level. This will include, but is not limited to: advanced turf management, safe and accurate pesticide/fertilizer applications, and all aspects of managing infield clay, pitching mounds, and home plate areas, along with warning track.
• Manage field preparations for all Major League Baseball games, manage all field requests from the players and coaching staffs of the Nationals and visiting teams.
• Manage all non-gameday field activities. This will include, but is not limited to: concerts, corporate sponsorship events, community relations outreach programs, and all other non-baseball scheduled events.
• Manage general maintenance of all equipment in order to extend the useful life and appearance: preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, accurate maintenance records, scheduling service, and parts inventory management.
• In the absence of the Director of Field Operations, this position will be required to supervise and perform all field activities, supervise all staff, and effectively communicate with front office employees, upper management/ownership, coaching staffs, players, and umpires.
• This position is not exempt from any other duty that is required to fulfill the expectations and overall operations of the Field Management Department.
Requirements:
• Associates and/or Bachelor’s Degree in Turfgrass Management, Soil Science, or Agronomy.
• Minimum of 4 years supervisory experience in professional baseball.
• Active member of SportsTurf Managers Association (STMA).
• Certified Sports Field Manager (CSFM) preferred and/or achieved within first year of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities necessary to perform essential functions:
• Fluent knowledge of agronomy and regional turfgrass management practices including, but not limited to: pest, disease, and weed management, soil chemistry, variety of aerifications, topdressing, sodding, seeding, painting of field logos, field layout, and measurements.
• Experienced in irrigation management: monitoring moisture, scheduling of programs, repairs, audits, adjustments, general knowledge of booster pump operations.
• Ability to safely operate a variety of equipment: mowers, tractors, turf cultivating implements, forklifts, skid steers, boom lift, and scissor lifts.
• Experienced in renovation or reconstruction of existing playing field whether performed internally or by external sports field contractors.
• Possess a strong ability to problem solve, proactively plan ahead, and think creatively to support operations.
• Ability to meet deadlines under pressure and frequently handle a rapidly changing work schedule and environmental conditions throughout workday.
• Budget management skills are required.
• Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
• Knowledge of MLB policies along with standard MLB field specifications.
• Required to obtain a Washington, DC issued Pesticide Applicators License within first year of employment.
• Ability to lift, carry, and transport up to 50 pounds.
• Must possess superb attention to detail.
• Required to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Physical/Environmental Requirements
• Field management employees perform the majority of their work outdoors in various weather conditions.
• The job is not considered dangerous; however, pesticides can be harmful if not handled with proper care.
• Employees working with tools and machines can be injured if they use them incorrectly or carelessly.
Worker will be subject to inside and outside environmental conditions: extreme heat, extreme cold, noise, hazards, and atmospheric conditions (fumes, odor, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation). While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, walk short and long distances, run short and long distances, and climb up and down stairs. The employee is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or sit and must lift and move up to 50 pounds.
