Full Time Job
The Senior Legal & Business Affairs Executive is responsible for delivering high quality legal affairs advice to production teams which is technically excellent, trusted and in accordance with the commercial imperatives of the business. As part of a small team, the role will be responsible for dealing with legal matters arising throughout program production (from development through to broadcast and beyond) across the spectrum of non-scripted and scripted programming (including living history, entertainment, specialist factual and factual entertainment). The role will also advise on general legal issues as and when required.
The Daily
• Identify, formulate and implement systems to deliver ''best in class'' service and ensure contracts entered into represent the best possible business affairs and legal outcomes
• Drafting and advising on agreements for the development of programming, including development, talent and format agreements
• Drafting and advising on agreements for production of programming, including commissioning and production/co-production agreements, contributor agreements, location agreements, and production services agreements
• Drafting and advising productions on rights issues, clearance issues, and compliance matters
• Negotiating distribution agreements for the exploitation of program and ancillary rights
• Conducting production 'set up' meetings to advise teams on legal and compliance issues that may be relevant during production
• Advising on broadcasters' terms of trade and availability rights
• Negotiating and advising on production financing arrangements
• Viewing programs for legal and regulatory compliance
• Handling complaints and legal disputes
• Preparing production protocols and guidance notes for production teams in relation to key areas, such as child licensing, data protection and editorial compliance
• Advising on copyright, trademark and intellectual property matters
The Essentials
• Proven experience at a law firm, broadcaster or production company
• Preferably experience in both scripted and non-scripted television work
• Proven commercial negotiation and drafting experience
• A solid understanding of copyright law and of the ownership of rights in content and underlying material
• Strong compliance experience
• Ability to apply the law and negotiate agreements by reference to the commercial and creative imperatives of the business
• Excellent attention to detail
• Passion for delivering excellence
• Ability to manage a demanding workload and the expectations of multiple internal clients
• Excellent communication skills including the ability to distill legal principles into a sensible form for non-legal persons and to interact at all levels
• Ability to hit the ground running and work to tight deadlines
• Team player attitude but comfortable working independently
• Ability to build and maintain relationships across the group & wider industry
• Ability to interact effectively at all levels
• Excellent manner, listening and communication skills
• Fluent in both written and spoken German and English
• German law degree is required
