Job Title: Programme Executive/Manager, Milkshake!

Milkshake! is the #1 commercial children’s preschool block that broadcasts every morning on Channel 5. Milkshake! also sits on My5 and Amazon via More Milkshake!, in a bi-monthly magazine, on social media, as consumer products and a touring stage show. Milkshake’s core kid demo is 2-5 years, with ad demos of 16-34yr and ABC1s.
Channel 5 is looking for a Programme Executive/Manager who will be responsible for looking after all aspects of programme submissions (acquisition and commissions) from proposal to channel delivery, working to the VP, Programming VIMN Kids, UK and Ireland and a key role in the Milkshake! team to deliver on the editorial and commercial objectives of the channel brand. The roles mission is to source the best in class British preschool content that not only hits the key demographics, but also extends its reach and builds the Milkshake! brand.
The successful candidate should ideally have a pre-school editorial and creative view and will assist in deciding which programmes and acquisitions to licence. This individual will ensure the creative quality of programming across all of Milkshake!, whether that be from production companies or major studios and independent distributors and manage all aspects of delivery of the programmes to Milkshake!
Purpose of the role:
• To manage programme content for Milkshake! developing, commissioning and acquiring the best of British pre-school content for linear and nonlinear platforms
• To work closely with the Milkshake! team, Channel 5 Legal, Production Management, Communications, Editorial Operations and Nick UK to manage all aspects of the programme submission, development, delivery, launch and communication
• Strengthening the Milkshake! brand (on and off air, and across multiple digital platforms)
The ideal candidate:
• Passionate, creative and articulate about pre-school content
• A collaborative team worker
• Has a good understanding of the current Milkshake! content requirements with a strong editorial point of view
• Has experience sourcing or developing content to drive ratings and fit a brand
• Is confident in approach, with excellent communication skills to both internal and external departments
Key accountabilities:
• With the VP, Programming VIMN Kids, source for development commissions and acquisitions that are primarily UK originated content and the best of British Pre-school, working within the Channel 5 transmission budget for linear and non linear
• With the VP, Programming VIMN Kids, Channel Manager, Channel 5 Legal and Production Management to negotiate commissioned content and acquisition deals with independent distributors, for linear and non-linear platforms with input from Finance, Operations, Consumer Products and Ad Sales to ensure deals reflect the needs of the business
• Co-Executive on commissioned shows for Milkshake! to provide creative feedback that shapes the property to ensure it’s relevant for the pre-school audience and meets the creative and quality requirements of Milkshake! and Channel 5
• Manage the creative process from advising on writing team, creative approval of designs, characters, settings, springboards, premise, outlines, script passes, animatic and final animation, voice cast, opening and closing credits
• Oversee delivery of commissions and acquisitions to Broadcast Operations and RedBee, liaising with all parties organising clocks, end credits, access services, tech specs and entering programme details into What’s On (WON) and Tedial
• Oversee and administer all delivery materials including images, synopsis, cue sheets, credits including managing all Publicity Material and press releases for programmes and making them available to all relevant parties
• Ensure all OFCOM regulations are met
• Build and maintain relationships and be the key contact for external programme distributors and production companies for new programmes pitches and ideas as well as formal programme submissions
• Manage all programme submissions and take pitch meetings with relevant local producers/ distributors and feedback projects of interest to VP, Programming VIMN Kids and Director Content Acquisitions and Pre-School Current Series, Nick International
• Maintain and update all internal documents including screening, reporting and cataloguing of materials and all matters relating to content (themed episodes/backend rights/contracts/guest appearances/copyright lines etc.)
• Working closely with the Milkshake! Channel Manager to ensure all available programming is correctly plotted in channel plans and monthly schedules and meets transmission budget
• Reviewing the Press Information on a weekly basis to ensure all synopsis, images and credits are correct in the schedules for Press and RedBee
• Approving marketing materials and Freeview/Digital campaigns for the content brands
• Being the key contact with Producers and Distributors for any content requests for all Milkshake! activity, including award entries
• Communicate and execute Milkshake! programme plans to external partners and internal stakeholders
• Working with Research to provide rating updates to producers
• Generate ideas to expand the brand and commercial opportunities and work with commercial, consumer products and events teams to expand the brand and ensure best in class activations including the live stage tour and yearly DVD
• Travel to Programme Markets and Conferences where necessary
Required experience:
• Proven solid kid’s industry experience, preferably in UK preschool market
• Experience delivering high-quality programmes, either within commissioning, development or acquisition role
• Knowledge of the UK programme market and current channels’ output
• Working knowledge of broadcasting research and analysis
• Working knowledge of the importance of rights issues, the broadcasting regulatory context and the legal aspects of contracts, copyright and clearances in respect to television programme commissioning and production
• Experience in managing external suppliers and producers
• Good I.T. Skills including PowerPoint and Excel and experience using a Broadcast Media Management system (e.g. WON, Tedial)
