Department: Labor & Employment Law, Production Risk Team
Identify and mitigate risk for productions airing on various Viacom networks and platforms by analyzing a large volume of information regarding participants and crew, as well as developing protocols for individual productions. Analyze and make recommendations to our various networks’ Business & Legal Affairs and Production Management executives and work in close coordination with other internal departments, external vendors, and outside counsel. Position reports to Vice President, Business & Legal Affairs.
• Review and analyze background checks, psychological and medical evaluations, and other information to identify potential legal and media risks with respect to show participants. Review and analyze background checks for crew members for same.
• Advise internal and external production executives and Business & Legal Affairs executives on child labor laws in all 50 states as well as abroad, including permitting, hours restrictions, trust accounts, education, and parental supervision requirements. Complete or oversee child labor permit applications and ensure issuing of child labor permits nationwide.
• Provide legal advice pertaining to court affirmation of minors’ contracts.
• With outside counsel, manage production immigration issues, including applying for visas and/or reviewing visas and supporting documentation to ensure that non-citizens have the necessary authorization to work in the U.S. for Viacom Media Networks.
• Review and where necessary revise casting notices and casting applications for compliance with labor and employment laws, and to ensure compliance with company protocols.
• Review safety and security protocols on all shows.
• Research and advise production crews regarding visas, work authorizations, filming permits, carnets (for traveling with equipment) and liaise with internal departments regarding Foreign Corrupt Practices Act training for productions traveling outside of the U.S.
Basic Qualifications
• JD from an accredited law school.
• Member in good standing of the California State Bar or of another State Bar with ability to register as in-house counsel.
• Minimum of two years of relevant experience in TV/Film production law, labor & employment law, immigration law, or child labor law; or three to five years general legal experience at a law firm, network, studio, or production company.
• A working knowledge of television production a plus.
• Knowledge of Sharepoint a plus.
