Variety is seeking a passionate and collaborative, Special Projects Associate Art Director who will help define and produce our weekly magazine. The ideal candidate will work alongside our Editorial team and Creative Director to translate complex stories and ideas into amazing and award-winning designs.
This role is based in our West Los Angeles newsroom.
Responsibilities:
• Manage the design and art direction for the Focus section and Awards Circuit, being proactive in finding solutions to evolve and innovate the design.
• Lead the magazine's Special Issues biannually, developing new, unique design systems for each Special Issue.
• Ability to work closely with designers, photo editors and editors in a fast-paced environment.
• Commission and art direct original illustrations and conceptual photography.
• Negotiate fees, manage contracts and paperwork for assignments made.
• Contribute to critiques and offer constructive feedback in a collaborative environment.
• Color correct and prepare artwork for publication.
• Conduct daily meetings with the Creative Director to schedule the Focus section plan each day.
• Send out weekly emails with team assignments for Focus, Awards Circuit and special editions.
• Work closely with the Creative Director on overall look and feel of the Focus section pages.
• Run the art department Focus meetings every week. Ability to delegate assignments on a weekly basis depending on the size of the Focus section that week.
Requirements:
• 4-6 years of experience in editorial design.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to run the Focus section, Awards Circuit, and Special Issues independently with minimal supervision.
• Proactiveness and a self-starter is a must.
• Strong problem solver and excellent attention to detail, with the ability to work quickly and efficiently for a weekly publication.
• A strong passion and talent for typography, grids, photography and geometries is essential.
• Ability to come up with conceptual approaches to stories.
• Strong work ethic, with the ability to come up with design solutions in a high-pressure environment.
• Long standing relationships with illustrators.
• Expertise in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.
• Previous experience working at a weekly publication a plus.
