Reports To: Senior Director, Media Relations
Position Summary:
The Assistant Director of Media Relations will assist in the execution of USA Baseball's media plan through varying communication methods, media relations and brand management.
The Assistant Director of Media Relations will work closely with assigned national teams, national team development programs and various identification events. Other tasks and responsibilities will be assigned based on the applicant's experience, interests and department needs – inclusive of content creation and social media management. This candidate will hold a wide range of responsibilities, including writing, editing, graphic design, social media, media pitching and fulfilling and administering interviews. They will also assist in the facilitation of USABaseball.com using the Homebase CMS, as well as running USA Baseball's social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and more.
The Assistant Director of Media Relations will also be responsible for working with and training seasonal interns within the department and organization.
The ideal candidate is a creative self-starter who desires to constantly learn and grow professionally. He or she also seeks out new techniques to deliver fresh and innovative content that impact people and brands in a positive way. The Assistant Director of Media Relations should be an excellent communicator, open to constructive criticism, detail-oriented, able to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
Role and Responsibilities:
• Communicate and pitch national media coverage for USA Baseball national teams and events, as well as other organizational initiatives
• Facilitate game coverage for assigned national teams, national team development programs and events, as well as assist with other non-assigned events and national teams; including overseeing game day and intern staff at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina, domestically and internationally
• Development of brand awareness and positive working relations on behalf of USA Baseball with local and national team utilizing traditional media relations means such as press releases, media advisories, feature stories, social media, etc.
• Creation of content for USA Baseball as dictated in its yearly media plan and for its publications, as well as work closely with the Creative Services team to assist with or creation additional media content
• Write and edit various communication materials, record books, press releases (media advisories, press releases, etc.), feature stories, game notes; maintain the organizational history with daily and yearly updates as required
• Travel with assigned national teams or national team programs as assigned both domestically and internationally
• Assists the Director of Media Relations with all USA Baseball related media relations tasks as assigned
Key Attributes and Skills:
• 1-3 years of relevant work experience in amateur or professional baseball, collegiate athletic communications or with national governing bodies with a proven track record of performing all job requirements
• Strong interpersonal and written communication skills in a fast-paced, multi-faceted organization
• Proficiency in baseball scoring software GameChanger and StatCrew (The Automated Scorebook)
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint, as well as experience with Adobe Creative Cloud programs PhotoShop, InDesign, among others
• Advanced knowledge of social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, among others
• Basic knowledge of HTML and operating a CMS
• Passionate about baseball with an understanding of the amateur baseball landscape
• Exceptional interpersonal communication skills and attention to detail
• Ability to work in both a Mac and PC environment
• Proficiency social media analytics
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Communication Studies, Journalism or similar is required.
