The Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts, a newly established $57M facility and academic degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, is re-envisioning the university for the 21st century and how students learn. We are seeking a pioneering faculty team willing to overcome the status quo and foster authentic voices that reimagines how stories are told across live performance to immersive & interactive media, cinema arts, virtual and mixed reality, gaming, extended theatre, sonic arts, data +art, physical computing, and spatial and experience design.
We envision being the premiere destination for a faculty seeking a fresh social vision beyond today's cinema and gaming environments that values inclusivity and diversity, plays to the innermost recesses of our imaginations, solves human-scale problems and tells breathtaking stories that stimulate, provoke and inspire.
These positions come with a stipend to support research and creative activity. Our ideal candidates have a broad range of creative and technological proficiency and are passionate about creating technologically literate generations of designers and storytellers who can negotiate the nexus of storytelling, design, creative coding, technology and entrepreneurship.
We focus on experimentation and production both inside and outside of the classroom. Our approach to learning relies more on collaboration rather than competition so as to cultivate a creative environment in which exploration, analysis, risk, and failure can freely occur. Classes are run in a workshop-like environment facilitating active learning and encouraging discussion of concept, content, technique and impact. All faculty are expected to engage with students beyond the classroom through a culture of project assistance, advising, personal consultation and mentoring, and community.
Our brand-new facility opens in Fall 2019 when we welcome our first cohort of undergraduate students. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the founding team and to set the culture of the Center. While creativity and technical fluency in a number of disciplines is required, we are also looking for people who recognize the aesthetic, cultural, social, political and ethical implications of storytelling across multiple forms of media. Candidates must be able to engage in creative practice, explore new tools and modes of expression, and inspire students to do the same. We are also looking for people who will continually re-invent the curriculum as an ongoing part of their own commitment to continued professional work and development. The candidates will be supported in their own creative practice and will teach at all levels of teaching, from introductory undergraduate courses to eventually graduate students. The following are suggestions for areas of specialization that include, but are not limited to:
Storytelling as an iterative and collaborative process in the creation of narratives, scenarios or speculative futures; that acknowledges the effects of interactivity and a participatory culture in the story making process. Applicants from all story producing backgrounds welcome.
Design and visual expression for the moving, mediated and interactive image that merges fundamental design principles with opportunities afforded through new technologies. Applicants with architecture, design or other visual arts backgrounds welcome.
Computational methods and coding as they may apply to interactivity, artificial intelligence, visualization, data or machine learning for artists. Applicants with creative coding, computer science, engineering or other backgrounds welcome.
Interactivity and immersive media for web and mobile systems, mixed reality, smart environments or data visualization.
Experience design for the creation of story making, themed entertainment, games and performance, extended theatre and more.
Candidates must be active one of the following fields:
o Cinematic Arts
o Immersive & Interactive Media
o Virtual Production (eg: 3D animation, modeling, texturing, rigging, visual effects, compositing, and motion capture)
o Storytelling
o Spatial and Experience Design
o Physical Computing
o Sound Design
o Data + Art
o Extended Theatre
o Creative Coding
o Emerging Media Arts
They should show a strong interest in working collaboratively across the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts, have the ability to work effectively as part of a team, and show a strong commitment to progressive emerging media arts education as well as a keen interest in industry developments. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, including the ability to meet deadlines, communicate and motivate effectively are desired. Professional and or/educational experience in collaborative interdisciplinary contexts, project-based learning pedagogical design and festival and/or competition success preferred.
