Job title: Legal & Business Affairs Manager
Responsible to: VP, Head of Business Affairs, UMGB
Department: Universal Music & Brands, UMG (New Business)

Main purpose of role
Universal Music Group is the largest music company in the world with 34% market share. The company is fully owned by the Vivendi group (2016 turnover: €10B) and has been one of the first record company to enter the digital space as well as to develop a specific division dedicated to brands called UMGB (Universal Music Group and Brands). This division provides tailor made entertainment marketing solutions for brands for customer acquisition & retention and currently runs more than 350 major partnerships worldwide. Assisting the VP, Head of Legal and Business Affairs, UMGB the role will support and help manage the legal and business affairs operations across UMGB; the internal deal approval process, become an expert in music publishing for brand partnerships and draft contracts.
Key Responsibilities
• Assist the VP, Head of Business Affairs in overseeing the legal & business affairs operations across UMGB to ensure smooth processes, best practices and maximize returns.
• Facilitate the internal deal approval process to ensure senior management is made aware of and approves all relevant deals.
• Assist with negotiations across UMGB, including helping to:
• draft, review and negotiate commercial contracts with brands and artists;
• ensure internal and external compliance with relevant laws and guidelines;
• ensure the most effective and appropriate terms are being negotiated; and
• rights clearance – internal (master recording rights) and external (publishing rights).
• Work with the Commercial Affairs and Business Affairs teams to ensure the accurate provision of rights information, manage the retention of these rights across the division; advising accordingly.
• Produce and maintain a database of contracts and legal documents for UMGB
• Assist the VP, Head of Business Affairs UMGB with any commercial, business or legal issues or opportunities where they require guidance.
• Be a point of contact for local Business Affairs in UMGB's territories and help develop a Business Affairs network within UMGB.
• Support the UMGB team in pitching, structuring deals and ensuring compliance with legal terms and internal regulations.
• Supporting daily the VP, Head of Business Affairs UMGB in his role.
• Work closely with the Central UMGB Unit.

Desirable
• Experience working within an agency/ business development / marketing environment (preferably within the entertainment sector)
• Experience in music or strongly musically/media minded
• Experience with music publishing rights
• Experience of working at an international level
• Experience working within brand partnerships / business development on an international remit
• Understanding of music rights
• Understanding of and experience in commercial, IP, contracts and copyright work (drafting, negotiating and advising)
• Access to a network of contacts in any/all industries and willingness to seek opportunities for new brand partnership deals with UMGB
• Additional languages (preferably French) would be valuable
