Job title: Data Analyst
R eporting to: Data Analysis Manager
Department: Global Insight
Location of work: London
Main purpose of role
Overview
Universal Music Group is the world's leading music company. We are committed to artistry, innovation and entrepreneurship. We own and operate an array of businesses engaged in recorded music, music publishing, merchandising, and audiovisual content in more than 60 countries. Our vast catalog of recordings comprises the largest, most diverse and culturally rich collection of music ever assembled. As digital technology refashions the world, our unmatched commitment to lead in developing new services, platforms and business models for music and related content delivery empowers innovators and allows new commercial and artistic opportunities to flourish.
We are seeking a Data Analyst to join the Global Insight team (based in London) to support and develop our projects and capabilities. Global Insight acts as an insight & research agency within UMG. Handling a range of data sources and with expertise in various research areas, we provide unique detail into evolving attitudes and behavio u rs of today's music consumers and our artists' audiences. Servicing clients in different areas of our business, we deliver actionable insights that feed into strategy, operation, and promote revenue optimization. Liaising with a network of insight specialists in different countries, with a centralized research infrastructure, the UMG's Global Insight team provides localized research solutions within a global context.
Role overview
We are seeking a Data Analyst with advanced database analytics and data extraction (SQL) skills to support the extraction, manipulation and interpretation of our commercial data. In that role, you will not be designing or building databases, but will be writing ad-hoc SQL scripts to extract the data required, analysing the data and incorporating that into our various projects. There are three key aspects to this role:
1) Establishing what data is required to answer specific business questions; extracting the right data for the right projects.
2) Extracting and manipulating the data in a timely and accurate way.
3) Analysing the data and translating the results into insight & recommendations.
You will be working in joint team projects and autonomously, contributing to artist insight projects and global consumer projects with commercial implications. Although you will be focusing on leveraging commercial data in analysis, you will be a core part of a broader team, and work with qualitative and primary quantitative research specialists to fuse different data sources together, driving insight and actionable recommendations to the business.
Main deliverables/tasks
• Extract and manipulate large sets of commercial data to answer specific questions and broader topics.
• Analyse results to provide actionable insights to support/reject hypotheses about consumer behaviour and motives.
• Support the broader global team with data and analysis.
• Identify opportunities to develop the commercial data analysis, providing pro-active suggestions and innovating on an ongoing basis.
Person Specification
Skill-set/experience requirements
E ssential
• Degree in science, computer science, statistics, economics, mathematics, or similar quantitative discipline / experience.
• Extensive experience in a similar data analysis role.
• Strong database analytics and data extraction (SQL) skills are essential, ideally gained in a large data warehouse environment. Write well structured, performant SQL using advanced SQL techniques such as window functions where appropriate.
• Deep understanding of numbers, as well as a strong business sense. Ability to translate numerical findings into recommendations. Ability to explain complex topics in simple terms.
• Enjoys working in a team of people with different skill-sets.
• Enjoys working in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
• Enjoys working on bigger projects vs. just answering small, ad hoc analytical queries.
• Capable of understanding more complex, high-level business questions and turning them in to projects.
D esirable
• Experience with column store databases in general, and particularly Google BigQuery, would be an advantage. An understanding of performance tuning is desirable.
• Experience with hands-on statistical modeling (regression analysis, segmentations) would be a plus, but not essential.
Diversity and Inclusion
Universal Music is an equal opportunities employer. We embrace diversity and are committed to a working environment where no one will be treated less favourably on grounds of their sex, race, disability, sexual orientation, religion, belief or age
