We are currently hiring for the position of:
Senior Director, Film
Reporting to the Artistic Director and Co-Head, the Senior Director, Film will contribute to the strategy and lead the execution of programming for TIFF's Cinematheque, the Toronto International Film Festival, Theatrical bookings and Film Circuit.
ACCOUNTABLE FOR:
• Leading the strategy and guiding the curation of TIFF's Cinematheque
• Developing Theatrical strategy and industry relations to secure bookings that grow audience at TIFF Bell Lightbox.
• Managing Festival programming to maintain and strengthen TIFF's reputation with audiences, media and industry.
• Maintaining Film Circuit's engagement with Canadian audiences while increasing integration with TIFF's Theatrical and Online offerings
• Collaborating with the Artistic Director and programming teams to deliver an integrated, diverse offering of Cinematheque, Festival, Theatrical and Film Circuit programming for TIFF audiences.
• Participating in overall organizational planning including: Strategic and Operational plans, Annual Budgets, and Departmental work plans
Responsibilities
• Operational Management:
• Direction of TIFF's Cinematheque programming and presentation, including supervising the Cinematheque team
• Advise on strategy and execution for theatrical releases through collaboration with the Theatrical team and Artistic Director
• Direction of the Festival programming team, including working with the Artistic Director, Festival Programming staff and Festival programmers
• Develop a film distribution strategy for TIFF
• Lead annual post-mortems and improvement plans for TIFF Cinematheque, Festivals, Theatrical and Film Circuit
• Hold a leadership role in the international film field, through close working relationships with international curators, festivals, and film makers
Talent Management:
• Lead TIFF's Cinematheque, Festival Programming and Theatrical and Film Circuit teams
• Ensure departments are managed effectively by providing active guidance and mentorship to department Directors
• Ensure departmental operating goals and work plan targets are achieved by reviewing plans with department heads on a regular basis
• Annually review structure of all teams and revise according to needs
• Conduct annual performance reviews and set annual goals for direct reports of full-time personnel
Financial Management:
• Collaborate with Senior Directors and Management Team colleagues to ensure smooth integration of programming with revenue generation and delivery of programming to audiences
• Work with Artistic Director and programming teams to set annual plans and measurable outcomes for programming
Minimum Requirements
• Masters Degree in Film, preferred but not mandatory
• A minimum 10 years of significant programming experience at a major film festival or at a significant programming institution. This should include direct supervision of other programmers, establishing the programme structure for their institution, travelling to other major film festivals for selection purposes
• A minimum 10 years of experience leading, managing, or curating a film programme at a senior/executive level
• Significant administrative experience and annual budget supervision of approximately $4 million
• Awareness and understanding of communities served, locally, nationally, and internationally
• An understanding and commitment to inclusiveness, diversity of programming, and public accountability; Extensive knowledge of programming for diverse audiences
• Significant international profile in the film industry, including relationships with the key Canadian, American, and international distributors and studios, international sales agents and national film organizations
• Experience working collaboratively both inside and outside a film institution
• Minimum 7 years' experience managing teams with the ability to:
• -establish goals, project plan, organize and implement schemes
• -manage and build relationships with a range of stakeholders
• -strategic, analytical and creative thinking to identify, evaluate and solve complex problems in an innovative yet practical way
• Travel Requirements: 10 % - 15%
• Fluency in language(s) beyond English preferred
