Senior Legal Editor, Intellectual Property & Technology (Practical Law - Entertainment & Media Transactions)
Overview:
Practical Law US is looking for a Senior Legal Editor who has a passion for research and writing on legal topics to create attorney-specific resources focused on entertainment and media transactions. Our culture is dynamic, energetic, and intellectual. Our hours are regular and vacations uninterrupted. We work collaboratively on resources and interesting projects that integrate with Thomson Reuters' other offerings, particularly in the legal technology space.
The focus of the editor is to expand the scope of our legal know-how materials in the following areas:
• Copyright and media transactions generally;
• Film, TV, and new media development, production, and distribution; and
• Music industry transactions.
The Attorney will:
• Conceptualize, draft, edit, and maintain original legal know-how materials, including practice notes, annotated standard-form documents and checklists for online and print publication.
• Maintain current awareness of and analyze law and market practice in this area.
• Focus and shape the future of Practical Law's entertainment and media transactions content.
• Establish and maintain relationships with external law firm contributors.
• Assist with the development of special projects undertaken by Thomson Reuters and Practical Law.
• Collaborate with sales and marketing teams to plan and lead product demonstrations, webinars, and in-person continuing legal education seminars for current and potential subscribers.
• Write and edit content for Practical Law's companion magazine, Practical Law The Journal.
• Develop relationships with law firm attorneys, in-house counsel and industry groups to ensure that the IP&T service's content is topical and meets their needs.
Qualifications:
*This role may be located in a home office if candidate is not near a Thomson Reuters facility.*
Candidates should have at least the following skills and experience:
• A J.D.
• At least eight years' experience working as an entertainment and media transactions lawyer in a law firm and/or as in-house counsel.
• Enthusiasm and ambition, with a desire to improve the efficiency of legal services.
• A solid understanding of the needs and priorities of law firm and in-house counsel and the legal market.
• A passion for writing and good editing skills, including:
o very close attention to detail;
o impressive command of grammar, punctuation and plain English;
o strong technical drafting skills; and
o the ability to write about complex legal issues clearly and simply.
• Expertise in entertainment and media law and practice, optimally including:
o copyright acquisitions and assignments, chain of title review and other due diligence, and content licensing and distribution across all media and platforms;
o TV, film, and new media development, financing, production, and distribution agreements;
o music industry agreements, including recording, songwriting, administration, and license agreements; and
o talent, collective bargaining, agent, and management agreements.
• Significant practice experience in one or more of the following areas is helpful:
o internet and social media related matters, including user-generated content, DMCA, mobile app development and distribution, data licensing, web development and hosting;
o technology transactions, including software and technology licenses and services agreements; and/or
o copyright litigation.
Candidates selected for a second interview will be required to undertake writing and editing tests.
