About the Position The Shed is a commissioning organization devoted to supporting leading artists to create new work in a variety of venues, ranging from a large hall to theaters to art galleries. The Production Supervisor should demonstrate an aptitude and willingness to brainstorm creative strategies and solutions to technical design challenges throughout the Production Process; to implement best practices while developing the Shed-way; to think outside the box, where appropriate with the artists, and Shed colleagues.
The Production Supervisor will have strong technical aptitude as well as creative management and development skills, work well under short time constraints, and be able to pivot easily from one task or idea to another. They should be experienced with all aspects of technical production, and have an in depth knowledge of NYC vendors and practices. Theatre, music, and event production experience is essential, as is an open, creative approach to the production process. Sensitivity to varying artists' and clients' needs and patience amidst changing priorities will help immeasurably in this position.
The Production Supervisor will report to the Director of Production and will work on all events as assigned. The Production Supervisor will work closely with the Production Manager and Technical Director, as well as producers, curators, and the creative team, to manage the day to day production process including the running of shows. A flexible schedule is a requirement. Patience and a good-natured attitude will be essential.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to Performance Management
- Provide direct onsite day to day supervision of the assigned project
- Track Stagehand Hours
- Create daily reports for projects in the technical phase and performance reports from the dress rehearsal on
- Work with external vendors on logistical and billing processes
- Work with the stage management team, producers, and creative team to maintain and distribute the daily schedule
- Work with designers and in house technical staff to facilitate and coordinate the installation of assigned projects
- Work with Stage Management team to ensure performer safety is maintained
- Interact with Front of House Staff to coordinate all activities interrelated between the production and the Front of House Staff
- Interact with Facilities and Operations staff in matters related to assigned projects
Health and Safety
- Insure that Shed safety practices are followed by Shed staff in all production related activities
- Oversee and support a safe and effective work environment by providing and encouraging the use of all required and recommended safety equipment and procedures
- Actively work to avoid any situation that would create an unsafe work environment
General
- Inform the Director of Production, Production Manager, Technical Director of issues arising out of the day to day operations of the technical department
- Provide recommendations on how to improve day-today efficiency within the department and organization
Qualifications
and Qualities
- Bachelor's degree in theatre production or similar
- 3 years' experience in a management position in theatrical discipline. Experiences in event production desired but not required
- Demonstrate broad and deep knowledge of theater production and entertainment technology including lighting and design, sound reinforcement and recording, video sources and projection, rigging, carpentry, properties and stagecraft
- Experience with AutoCad, Vectorworks, and/or SketchUp is desired. Good written and verbal communication skills is a required
- Experience working in an environment where collective bargaining agreements are in effect
- Experience working in the New York market desired
- Ability to work with a flexible schedule
- Experience at an arts-producing organization, preferably a non-profit, is a plus
- Experience with MS Word and Excel along with the Google Suite of Products is required
- Must be able to operate in theatrical locations such as a rigging grid
- Must be able to be mobile for extended periods of time
- Must be able to work in hazardous environments, confined spaces, and to wear and work in personal protective equipment
