The Gotham Film & Media Institute (formerly IFP) is a non-profit dedicated to discovering, supporting and celebrating the people and projects that shape the future of story. The Gotham is seeking a Documentary Program Manager to support the organization's documentary programming, which include the Gotham Documentary Feature Labs, a year-long mentorship program for filmmakers working on their first feature film; and Gotham Week, whose key component, the Gotham Week Project Market is the largest co-production market for independent film in the U.S. In addition to Documentary related programming, the Documentary Program Manager works with the Gotham's programming team to support on general programming needs.
The successful candidate will be a creative, highly organized and collaborative team-player, with a strong interest in non-fiction storytelling across different formats and a track record of working in the documentary field. Previous experience working in a non-profit environment and/or for programs of artist support is a plus.
The position is contract and would begin in March 2021 through December 2021. The candidate is expected to work remotely.
Job Responsibilities:
Documentary Lab (The lab is comprised of three modules in May - Completion Lab, September-Gotham Week, and December-Marketing and Distribution Lab)
• Acting as main point of contact for selected Documentary lab participants leading up to and during the lab; also ensuring follow up to track lab projects after lab ends
• Designing the lab curriculum and selecting speakers/mentors in the areas of editing, fundraising, post-production, marketing, festival strategy, sales, delivery and distribution, among others
• Tracking and maintaining Documentary Lab budget. Budget tracking items include payment of lab leaders, panelists, mentors, etc
Gotham Week
• Plan and execute the Gotham's Spotlight on Documentaries Program at Gotham Week, including liaising with Industry attendees, supervising the coordination of over 1,300 one-on-one Project Forum meetings, and producing the virtual meetings
• Evaluating Gotham Week project materials and overseeing the selection process in order to identify projects and new voices to support, in alignment with Gotham's emphasis on diversity and inclusion
• Assembling and managing selection committees, and creating an inclusive environment for Gotham Week projects
• Research and outreach of organizations that support underrepresented voices to invite to apply to Gotham Week
• Producing and participating in info session on the Gotham Week Spotlight on Documentaries
• Hiring and managing the Spotlight on Documentaries Coordinator
• Recruiting, training and managing highly motivated volunteers
Additional Programming Support
• Working with the Programming team to improve and expand existing programs, as well as supporting new initiatives
• Supporting membership programs, with speaker recommendations and class instructors
• Gathering updates from Programs Alumni and supporting the Development department in creating programs reports for funders and board meetings, and/or decks for funding and partnerships purposes
• Liaising with the Marketing department regarding all programs communication and design purposes
• Support Deputy Director with equity programs as needed (Womxn Owning It and Expanding Communities)
• Overall being the face and contact person for the Documentary programs
Position Requirements:
• Bachelor Degree in a related field - e.g. Film, TV Production, Journalism, Liberal Arts;
• At least 5-7 years of directly related experience, e.g. non-fiction programming, artist development and/or documentary production
• Excellent analytical skills and ability to evaluate documentary film and provide creative feedback
• Outstanding organizational skills and ability take initiative and self-manage workload while performing well in a fast-paced environment and against deadlines
• Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills, including the ability to liaise tactfully with Industry professionals at all levels
• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in recording, tracking and issuing information
• Excellent knowledge of new platforms, mediums and storytelling formats
• Strong work ethic and ability to maintain a positive attitude with a flexible and collaborative approach at all times
• Working knowledge and proficiency in database use
• Strong knowledge of the U.S. and International non-fiction landscape
