Summary of Position
The Exchange is currently seeking a Director, Acquisitions & Development. This role encompasses advocating for projects to acquire, develop and convert for the company and overseeing them through completion under the supervision of the head of department.
Responsibilities
- Source new content and IP opportunities (finished and packages) for potential acquisitions by various methods such as:
- Reviewing industry trades (i.e. Deadline, Variety, Hollywood Reporter, IMDBPro, etc.) on a daily basis.
- Review all submission emails from producers or filmmakers.
- Review film market centric websites such as thefilmcatalogue.com and cinando.com for upcoming films and their corresponding sales agents.
- Attend acquisitions screenings at various agencies, film festivals or review screening links for films coming from agencies or producers.
- Attend certain film festivals and film markets, such as AFM, Toronto, SXSW, Sundance, etc.
- Work closely with head of department in reviewing scripts and all materials for development/production/acquisition opportunities.
- Work strategically with head of department and sales team on sales projection and build financial model to justify the investment or acquisition.
- Develop content acquisition plans and goals for senior management.
- Negotiate and execute acquisition term sheets with guidance from senior management.
- Determine appropriate producers and/or financiers to send scripts to that The Exchange finds or develops.
- Oversee financial closing on the projects alongside senior management.
- Draft talent offers and package projects to be launched at a marketplace.
- Externally, establish and manage strong relationships with producers, filmmakers, and any other source of content creators.
- Externally, establish and manage strong relationships with financiers, agents, and managers.
- Overseeing Manager of Acquisition and their activities.
Qualifications & Skills
- Candidate must have 3-5 years of prior experience in development or acquisitions at production company, sales agents, or studios.
- Proven experience in effectively leading films from inception to completion.
- Ability to self-generate and procure material and talent relationships.
- Strong relationships with a broad set of diverse and underrepresented storytellers (writers, directors, producers).
- Strong existing relationships with agencies and talent.
- Must be familiar with the film and TV global landscape and be able to keep up to date with trends within the industry.
- Deep product understanding with a genuine passion and respect for entertainment content.
- Self-starter who proactively seeks ways of developing his/her/their own skills.
- A can-do attitude and an ambition to progress career within the content industry.
- Must be able to communicate effectively and tactfully with all levels of management and talent.
- Must be a team player.
