Sundance Institute is a nonprofit dedicated to the discovery and development of independent artists and audiences. Through our programs we discover, support and inspire independent film, media and theatre artists from the United States and all over the world.
Based in Los Angeles, CA and Park City, UT, our full time staff of approximately 200, and growing to nearly 500 and 2000 volunteers in lead up to and during the annual Sundance Film Festival, is a thriving community of expert doers and passionate creatives.
Our Senior Director, Human Resources will be a thought partner to the leadership team, responsible for developing and overseeing all HR related functions for staff and volunteers.
The Senior Director will implement organization-wide strategies that support talent acquisition, development, management and retention; employee experience and engagement; compensation and benefits strategy; diversity, equity, and inclusion; and succession planning.
The ideal candidate is passionate about people and culture. They will have a strong business experience and a deep understanding of HR practices, laws and proven leadership skills.
Things on Your To-do List:
In this role you will oversee our Human Resources team of 10 to meet the needs of all office locations, currently in California, Utah and New York, ensuring high level of service and expertise in all HR areas, including:
Executive Leadership:
• Serve as a key adviser to the Executive Director, Managing Director, and Senior Leadership Team on organizational strategy, labor planning, management, and other relevant HR areas.
• Provide insight to guide decision-making and offer proactive solutions.
Employee Engagement:
• Plan and implement activities to improve organizational culture and increase employee engagement, including planning and implementing all staff retreats.
• Administer employee engagement surveys; analyze results, make data-backed recommendations for strategic initiatives to improve engagement.
• Drive employee diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives to further hiring, retention, and development of diverse talent.
• Develop HR related organizational metrics; monitor trends, recommend program adjustments, and deliver results
Compensation & Labor Budgeting:
• Direct key areas of the Institute's labor budget including salaries, benefit plan costs, incentive pay, and annual inflationary costs. Conduct comparative analysis and benchmarking to support short and long term planning and to ensure the organization is competitive with the market in regards to compensation and benefits.
Benefits:
• Design and optimize our benefits programs to ensure competitiveness, effectiveness and alignment with Sundance core values and culture.
Recruitment:
• Responsible for developing recruitment practices and employer branding strategies that yield a diverse and inclusive pool of qualified internal and external applicants.
• Personally drive and oversee high-level recruitment/searches, external labor agreements.
Training and Development:
• Assess training needs and create multi-year training and development plans for all staff and targeted groups of employees and managers.
Employee Relations & Labor Law:
• Create and implement clear and effective Human Resources policies and procedures, ensuring practices and policies are in line with emerging trends, best practices, state, federal and local laws, and support and promote equity and transparency.
• Ensure Sundance Institute is in compliance with US labor laws.
Skills
You'll Need in Your Toolbox:
• 10 years of leadership experience in Human Resources, Business and/or Organizational Development with exposure to a similar or adjacent industry and rapid growth culture.
• Experience and demonstrated ability to flourish in a hands-on, highly collaborative environment populated with millennial demographic employees.
• Experience in the arts, media, entertainment or a digital content company is helpful but not mandatory.
• Bachelor's degree in Business; Human Resources or related degree.
• Broad understanding of and capability for the technical and functional components of HR.
• Possesses excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, and understands the implications their actions and the HR function will have on the strategic, financial and organizational demands of an evolving organization.
• Demonstrated record of success in the areas of mitigating legal and business risks.
• Intellectual horsepower to operate effectively in a complex environment and develop effective talent strategies to market the culture, mission, and values of the organization.
• Sufficient organizational agility to quickly adapt to change and redirect resources effectively and appropriately.
• Strong leadership and the ability to build strong relationships at all levels while working across the organization in order to drive results.
• Exceptional team player and leader who inspires and motivates his/her reports and colleagues to achieve superior results.
• Ability to drive change by engaging others and getting buy-in through influence in order to achieve goals.
• Presence, credibility and stature to generate respect, trust and a positive image for the organization.
• Highest levels of personal and professional integrity and ethics.
Bonus Points:
• Master degree.
• SPHR or SHRM-SCP certification.
• Non-profit experience.
