Vice President, Intellectual Property
Sony Pictures is in search of a Vice President to join our intellectual property team located in our Culver City headquarters. Reporting to the EVP Intellectual Property, the VP will manage the TRA©K-IP department (Titles, Rights Administration, Copyright, and Contracts – Intellectual Property), which is responsible for Copyright, Rights Administration, and Title Clearance. The ideal candidate will be an attorney with a strong background in copyright and/or entertainment contracts and experience in managing a team.
SPE's TRA©K-IP Group serves clients across SPE's divisions, supporting motion picture, television and digital production, acquisitions., and distribution. The environment is fast-paced and allows for opportunities to work on diverse subject matters and to manage a team.
This position will be primarily responsible for the daily management and performance of the following tasks:
• Provide advice, counsel and analysis of domestic and international copyright, media definitions, and contractual interpretation
• Oversee and direct the preparation of copyright registrations and recordations of licenses and agreements
• Advise on rights and copyright status regarding the company's works
• Advise and inform senior management of intellectual property matters
• Ensure that legal issues are communicated to clients
• Oversee the review and analysis of distribution rights, media definitions, co-financing agreements, acquisition agreements, and underlying literary property agreements
• Review issues related to remakes, sequels, stage, and other ancillary rights, including terminations and reversions
• Oversight of feature title clearances with the MPAA Title Bureau
• Select, develop, and manage employees in the department to ensure the efficient operation of the department
Qualifications:
• Law degree
• Member of the CA Bar
• 10 years' experience as an attorney
• Strong client relationship skills including the ability to support senior executives
• Broad understanding of Intellectual Property rights
• Strong written and oral communication skills and ability to interact in a collaborative spirit
• Ability to interact on a regular basis with clients (including senior executives) across SPE's divisions as well as with third parties
• Excellent organizational skills Strong management and interpersonal skills
