Graduate Business Affairs Intern, Sony Pictures Television – Spring 2019
The Sony Pictures Entertainment Internship program offers a unique opportunity to work alongside the teams that come together to create movies, TV shows, and other great experiences. These seasonal paid assignments provide meaningful and productive work that allow you to build your resume, experience and develop your skills further. You will be provided with challenging tasks, real-world experience, valuable networking opportunities, and many educational and social opportunities while on the lot.
This Spring internship is from January to May. All candidates must be able to work between 10-29 hours.
Sony Pictures Television U.S. Business Affairs is responsible for negotiating the various deals for talent (Producers, Writers, Directors, Rights Holders, Consultants and Actors) on our television series, pilots & upcoming development deals. We handle the negotiations with broadcast, cable networks and license fees for our television programming. The agreements are drafted and processed to ensure that all pertinent parties receive the documentation that they require to efficiently conduct business in their own area. The retention of these documents, handled by the assistants as well, also provides the means for historical research from which future deals & projects are often based.
The Business Affairs Administration area of the department handles the payments for our various deals (to Writers, Rights Holders & the like) and they provide payroll assistance & help with office placement for our Overall Term Deals (for Non-Writing Producers, Writers and Directors). These two areas work hand in hand through the agreements that are drafted for our talent & with the Creative department to determine the script steps that writers have delivered so that they are paid in a timely manner per Guild guidelines.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Review and assist in drafting correlating writer, rights, producer, director, actor license agreements
• Produce charts relevant to deals and agreements
• Researching legal agreements, the organization of documents in our filing system for scripted & non-scripted development, pilots, series and Movies of the Week (MOWs), and participate in the records retention process
• Attending meetings focused around the negotiation process
• Obtain an understanding of the Business Affairs process including how the deals come in, what the negotiators look for in making several entities work together under the umbrella of one project
• Gain knowledge of the payment process through how it relates to the agreement that governs it
• Detailed understanding of the documentation that is the product of our deals through assisting in the organization of our filing system.
• Overall knowledge gained in Business Affairs terminology & the decisions required to close various deals
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Financial and/or payroll knowledge is a plus as it pertains to our Business Affairs Administration group
• Experience working in Outlook, Word & Excel
• Willingness to ask questions when necessary for clarity & accuracy on projects assigned
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Currently enrolled as a Junior or Senior in a business affairs or legal program preferably, however, business administration majors are considered as well
