Head of Licensing and Merchandise, Funimation (Dallas or LA)
Funimation is looking for a self-motivated Head of Licensing and Merchandise to join our team. We are looking for an intrepid problem-solver to dive into leading a growing global licensing and merchandise business. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining strong licensor and licensee relationships, leading overall business performance, and driving licensing revenue, market share, and, contribution margin performance.
You will lead business development initiatives to identify new licensing partners and product categories, including researching, pitching, negotiating and executing contracts. Use licensing opportunities to help build global brand franchises that generate revenue streams across multiple categories.
The ideal candidate will have an established background building a strong licensing business around global brand(s). This person will communicate and collaborate with peer department heads, including partnering with marketing to determine products that are brand consistent and with licensors and licensees to align on creative design.
The core responsibilities of this position include:
• Develop a global licensing strategy/program for Funimation
• Identify new opportunities in accordance with the global licensing and merchandise strategy, liaising with senior management and licensors on researching, pitching, negotiating and fully executing licensing contracts.
• Nurture relationships with all licensors for which Funimation is a merchandise licensee
• Maintain existing licensee relationships across all product categories and optimize commercial terms of these partnerships for Funimation
• Develop and execute merchandising strategies that maximize revenue across multiple categories including our expansion into Mobile Gaming
• Interact with licensors and brand managers to educate on potential licensing opportunities
• Develop brand management plan of each property. Work closely with the senior marketing team to provide input for trade and consumer advertising, PR and research.
• Take a leadership position with the brand managers and licensors to set product development plans, product positioning, and key selling benefits.
• Forge close relationships with strategic partners in appropriate products categories including apparel, figures, gifts, games, online, accessories, home furnishings and others.
• Develop retail relationships with key mass market and specialty retailers, identifying strategic relationships and selling in merchandise promotions.
• Ensure that any brand extensions will make a meaningful contribution to preserving and furthering the overall life of the underlying property
• Partner with our DTC eCommerce team to bring unique and exclusive merchandise to our online store and convention experiences
• Work closely with Brand Managers to streamline licensee creative requests and approvals process streamlined
• Maintain and update revenue forecasts at the licensee and title level
• Direct licensees on royalty statements, budgeting and projections and monitor partner payment compliance
• Work closely with Finance department to ensure proper revenue recognition and collections
• Work with Legal to develop anti-piracy strategies
• Work with acquisitions and brand managers to stay abreast of new and developing titles suitable for licensing opportunities
• Understand relevant marketplace dynamics and other key issues leading to appropriate recommendations for the licensing mix May serve as architect or project lead in course of large or complex project.
• Manage a team of licensing experts into a highly performing licensing team.
• Have a vested interest in their direct report's long-term career and life goals and help them manage plans to reach those goals
The minimum qualifications & requirements for this position include:
• An accomplished Licensing and Merchandising executive who also has expertise in Sales and Business Development.
• 15 years in product roles with 4 years' operating at a senior leadership level. Minimum of 5 years of consumer product experience
• Minimum of 5 years at building and managing teams
• Good relationships and good 'street cred' in the Industry.
• The ability to see over the horizon to where the next Licensing opportunities are because of a wide knowledge of the industry, with a very high level of commercial awareness.
• Understanding of 'fan mentality' is key
• Extensive Pop Culture knowledge and passion highly desired
• Great communicator - ability to communicate clearly and with inspiration
• Highly effective leadership skills and proven track record of achieving results and exceeding expectations
• Detail oriented and excellent analytical, financial and strategic planning skills
• Strong interpersonal skills and a flexible mentor focused on Team development
• Sense of urgency in pursuing business opportunities and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline driven, growth environment
• Demonstrated ability to thrive in an entrepreneurial, ''all hands-on deck'' and highly innovative environment
• Experience with both start-ups and larger scale consumer products
• A strong people leader and developer of talent who isn't afraid to get their hands dirty
• Likes working at a fast pace, is self-directed, and able to manage multiple concurrent competing challenges, issues and priorities
