Participations, Residuals and Audit Intern, CORP – Fall 2019
The Sony Pictures Entertainment Internship program offers a unique opportunity to work alongside the teams that come together to create movies, TV shows, and other great experiences. These seasonal paid assignments provide meaningful and productive work that allow you to build your resume, experience and develop your skills further. You will be provided with challenging tasks, real-world experience, valuable networking opportunities, and many educational and social opportunities while on the lot. This Fall internship is from September through December 13th and all candidates must be able to work between 10-29 hours a week (flexible based on school schedule).
The Residuals and 3rd Party Audit this group manages audits initiated by the Company's participants and Guilds in regards to the distribution of all motion picture products. The group manages approximately 75 to 100 audits in various stages per year.
The audit group handles everything from contract review, audit scoping, day-to-day management of audit requests and auditor interaction, and eventual settlement of any issues that arise.
The Participations group is responsible for preparing and delivering royalty reports to third party participants on all film, television and new media libraries. These reports are the subject of the audits referenced above.
The Residuals group is responsible for making contributions to the various Guilds. These payments are contingent compensation which means they are governed by collective bargaining agreements negotiated between the Guilds and the studios. The Guilds that we pay includes SAG-AFTRA, WGA, DGA, AFM, IATSE (US Guilds), and ACTRA, UBCP, MEAA, and PACT/Equity (Foreign Guilds). The Residuals are paid to actors, writers, directors and musicians and in addition contributions are paid to the associated pension and health plans for all Sony produced and acquired Features and TV shows. This group is also responsible for reporting and payment of related statutory and voluntary taxes, deductions and employer contributions.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• The intern will assist the audit managers with preparing reports and schedules required to commence an audit
• The intern will then be tasked with aiding the audit group with pulling, reviewing, and providing, under the supervision of the manager, supporting documentation requested by auditors
• The intern will be exposed to system-to-system data reconciliations, tracing transactions from the statement back to the source, and communicating with other business units to gain a better understanding of what the data means and how it relates to the distribution and/or production of motion pictures
• The Intern will work with the Participations group preparing and issuing statements to various participants (i.e. Actors, Writers, Directors, Co-financiers etc.) and on other special projects
• Work with the various finance systems, including SAP, and reporting systems used by the Company
• Assist Senior Analysts in preparing box office bonus schedules when new films are released
The intern will learn the following:
• How to read third party agreements
• How to apply the terms of the agreements to distribution statements
• Work with the various finance systems, including SAP, and reporting systems used by the Company
• How to understand recurring statement issuance, ensuring all contractual agreements and financial obligations are met
• How to create contract abstracts by reading and analyzing third party agreements
• Setup Verification (Checking cast lists, guilds)
• Document Gathering / Identifying Missing Information (Acquisitions, New Media, etc.)
• Abstracting Distribution Deals / New Media Agreements
• Working with the Residuals group the Intern will learn about the various Guild agreements and gather, review and prepare documents in accordance with the Guild agreements so that the various participants will be properly setup and paid in a timely manner by our third-party payer
• The experience in Audit, Residuals, Participations and Payroll will allow the intern to apply knowledge gained in the classroom to real-world finance operations by learning how to audit a company's books and records, communicate clearly, prepare statements, understand Residuals and gain an understanding of all aspects of the studio's operations
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Intermediate to advanced Excel skills
• Working knowledge of other MS Office products such as Word and PowerPoint
• Ability to read and understand legal documents; knowledge of accounting principles and systems
• Ability to work independently, and ability to work in a team environment; good communication skills, both written and verbal
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Undergraduate student pursuing a degree in relevant field
• Good reasoning skills
