ASSISTANT GENERAL COUNSEL OR VICE PRESIDENT, INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
The Intellectual Property group is seeking an experienced attorney at the Assistant General Counsel or Vice President level (title/level depending on experience) to help lead its TRA©K-IP Team. TRA©K-IP is responsible for rights analysis and administration regarding Sony Pictures Entertainment (''SPE'') properties, chain of title advice for new acquisition deals, and liaising with the Motion Picture Association and internal clients on global copyright policy matters. Reporting to the department's Senior Vice President, Intellectual Property (TRA©K-IP's ''Team Leader''), the Assistant General Counsel or Vice President will perform all aspects of the team's work, as needed, and assist the Team Leader in providing legal review of the department's work and advice to its many clients.
TRA©K-IP serves all clients across every SPE division, including domestic and international motion picture and television production and acquisitions groups, worldwide distribution groups, consumer products and location-based entertainment groups, and SPE's SVOD platforms / networks. The environment is fast-paced and allows for opportunities to work on diverse subject matter and sophisticated, complex legal issues.
Responsibilities
include:
• Providing legal guidance to clients and the team regarding chain of title review and copyright registrations / recordations
• Advising on rights pertaining to SPE's properties, including distribution, remake/sequel, live stage, merchandising, and all other ancillary / subsidiary rights
• Creating protocols for and reviewing the legal work of the team's attorneys and para-professionals to ensure that legal issues are consistently and correctly analyzed and clearly communicated to clients
• Helping formulate SPE's position on discrete copyright policy matters and, when applicable, communicating that position in conjunction with the Motion Picture Association
• Working creatively and analytically with the Team's IT partners on requirements for rights-related corporate databases
• Responsibilities require:
• Sophisticated knowledge of U.S. copyright formalities under the 1909 and 1976 Acts, including termination and reversion issues
• General knowledge of copyright issues outside of the U.S.
• Rights issues stemming from the WGA collective bargaining agreements
• Ability to interpret many types of entertainment contracts, including literary property agreements, co-financing and distribution agreements, network license agreement, and talent agreements
Qualifications:
• J.D. Degree (or equivalent outside of the U.S.)
• Member in good standing of the State Bar of California or eligible to become a registered in-house counsel of the State Bar of California
• Minimum of 8 years of experience as a lawyer, with significant experience in copyright and/or entertainment law
• Experience with chain of title and entertainment industry contracts strongly preferred
• Experience working in and/or helping design rights databases a plus
• Demonstrated ability to lead projects and people
• Superior written and oral communication skills

• Excellent legal and business judgment
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact in a collaborative spirit
• Strong organizational skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities
