Full Time Job
ARTnews and Art in America are hiring a Photo Editor who will be responsible for sourcing images, primarily for a print publication and, less frequently, for a website. The Photo Editor reports to the Design Director.
The Photo Editor will interact with various parts of the company in order to ensure that articles are properly imaged, and will work closely with the design department, as well as with the editors of Art in America and ARTnews. The Photo Editor will do occasional artist interviews and will have the opportunity to write for these publications, but this is not a necessary part of the job.
Responsibilities:
• Source images of artworks for print (and some web) articles via corresponding with museums, galleries, archives, artists’ studios, estates, photo databases, etc
• Communicate with editors and writers (in-house and freelance) and in-house design team about upcoming articles, image needs, photo shoots
• Oversee copyright and other legal permissions for images
• Write captions and credits using InDesign/InCopy
• Resize print images for web, prep images for input into WordPress (captions, alt text, building galleries/slideshows)
• Research and hire photographers and illustrators (including negotiating with agencies, corresponding about the assignment, and offering design feedback)
• Handle freelancer payments and image licensing invoices
• Maintain oversight of photo budget
• Serve as a point of contact between Art in America/ARTnews and the PMC digital content team
• Work with designers on article layouts, act as a bridge between editorial and design
• Identify archival photos for Art in America; do occasional artist interviews
Requirements:
• At least 2 years of experience working for a website or publication. Knowledge of the art world and art market, while helpful, is not required. We are looking for someone with strong organizational skills.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to work with multiple staff members on deadlines, and to keep track of multiple projects concurrently.
• Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and web DAM system
• Creative and detail-oriented, with the ability to work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
• Demonstrated ability to do outreach, over phone and email, to institutions and businesses to request materials.
• Deep understanding of photography styles and techniques
