Reel One Entertainment, a dynamic international film and television production and distribution with offices in Vancouver, Los Angeles, Montreal and London, is looking for a senior-level Business Affairs expert, to be based from its Los Angeles or Vancouver office.
Reporting to the Executive VP, Head of Business Affairs, this individual will be responsible for:
• Strategize and formulate the business plan for the slate of approximately 50+ movies per year, implementing efficiencies and economies where possible, and communicating the strategy to the Business Affairs and Finance teams for implementation.
• Closely overseeing various business relationships with our US production partners, balancing the needs of creative and production against smart business deals to minimize financial and legal risk and optimize results, while nurturing successful working relationships.
• Negotiating and drafting of all rights agreements from development through to production and distribution for a significant slate of television movies.
• Collaborate with Production and supervise all business and legal aspects of development and production, including production practices, budget review, the contracting process, rights and clearances, compliance and advising on guild/union matters and tax incentive program availability.
• Oversee the business, legal and financial elements of new production ventures such as negotiating deals with new third-party producers, establishing finance and production systems for in-house production in new locations (states), understanding and advising on tax credit programs (new to the Company), minimizing risk and maximizing return, advising on legal production issues in new production locations, etc.
• Collaborate with Finance and Distribution departments to minimize tax implications, financial risk and to improve business and cash flow positions for the slate of movies and corporate initiatives.
• Collaborate with head of Series Development on the business deals and strategies for optioning new and existing content, engaging writers, and advising on guild matters; drafting contracts and deal memos when required.
• Collaborating with teams in-house and third parties to formulate and implement strategies to satisfy corporate objectives.
• Confer with outside counsel and other professional resources, as needed.
• Initiating regular reporting to Executive Team concerning partnership, production and legal matters, identification of risk exposure, initiatives for improving efficiency, economies and mitigating risk, recognizing potential problems and opportunities, and presenting solutions.
Required Skills, Experience and Qualifications:
• Significant experience in scripted television and independent film in the United States, Canada and internationally (7 to 10 years).
• Extensive experience with the major film and television guilds, specifically SAG/ACTRA, WGA/WGC and DGA/DGC.
• Experience with various television tax credit programs in the United States and Canada; international experience is considered an asset.
• Series experience is an asset.
• Experience in managing personnel is required.
• Bilingual English/French is an asset.
