The Senior Director provides insight, vision and leadership to drive PBS toward sustainable, reliable and stable media infrastructure solutions as the organization shifts from satellite engineering to new platforms based on IP and cloud-based technology. S/he works collaboratively with peers within the OE&D department to design virtualized, cloud-based and/or hybrid distribution, infrastructure and play out solutions that will provide a path for both traditional and modern delivery of content via B2B or B2C. At the same time, s/he must ensure that the PBS Network Operations Engineering department, in both current and future states, operates efficiently and effectively supports PBS and its member stations in achieving their goals. This position provides critical support of the team's goal of ensuring that PBS and its member stations provide superior service to viewers using the best available technology in order to maintain at least 99.95% on-air reliability for all program feeds. S/he also develops and maintains an ongoing training program designed to build critical IP and IT skills within the current broadcast engineering staff.
Essential duties will include, but not limited to:
-In collaboration with colleagues, provide leadership and direction in design, implementation and deployment of a company-wide Cloud and Centralized Storage Strategy for PBS content and delivery
-Collaborate in the design and management of OE&D projects intended to maintain PBS' goal of 99.95% on-air reliability
-Manage the PBS NOC Engineering, Media Infrastructure and NOC Facilities teams, including strategic planning of activities, all aspects of personnel management, and development of an ongoing training program designed to build critical IP, IT and cloud architecture skills within the current broadcast engineering staff
-Lead the planning, execution and sustaining of comprehensive preventive maintenance on current and future engineering systems
Assist in the financial and technical analysis of the viability and business cases of future solutions
-Oversee respective department budgeting
-Provide support for PBS member stations
Requirements for success:
-Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline is required; an advanced degree in an engineering or management discipline is desired;
-10 years' experience planning and directing technology activities at the organizational and industry levels. This should include leading engineers, technicians, and other personnel, and managing technical operations and technical projects
-10 years' live production and remote production engineering experience, including both studio and field work
-5 years' experience working in the virtualized and ''cloud'' based content delivery space, utilizing proven methodology and delivering successful solutions
-Comprehensive understanding of digital as well as analog, audio, video, RF and data technologies with system design and troubleshooting capabilities in each area
-Experience leading the transition to IP in the broadcast and delivery environment
-Strong understanding of IP based LAN, WAN and Internet based systems, with extensive experience in configuration and troubleshooting of routers, switches and similar equipment.
-Proficient with budgetary planning, project management, word processing, database and scheduling software.
-Comprehensive knowledge and experience with various broadcast automation, video servers, encoders, decoders, transport, satellite control, monitoring, scheduling and traffic systems.
-Experience managing facilities management teams
-Experience in public broadcasting preferred
-Previous experience working with NABET union personnel is preferred
-Proficient in technical writing and presentations
-Familiar with applicable SMPTE, IEEE, ATSC and ITU standards
-Thorough knowledge of AutoCAD and/or other high-end drafting software
-This position will require some travel, evening, weekend work and ''on-call''
