The Director of Sustainability and Engagement is a newly-created, full-time position within the Producers Guild, one that seeks to harness the decade of work which pioneering producer members initiated through the launch of a PGA Green initiative and creation of the Green Production Guide in collaboration with studio partners. This work now encompasses a myriad of stakeholders both within the organization, and increasingly, external to the Guild. As we move forward, the Director of Sustainability and Engagement will be essential to assisting Guild leadership in identifying and providing metrics around strategic opportunities for collaboration with stakeholder communities that leverage the power of the Guild's network, credibility, thought leadership and influence as a convener to advocate for more sustainable practices on our productions and more broadly within the entertainment industry. A critical component of this work involves articulating the goals, objectives and best solutions-based practices which the Producers Guild is advocating for adoption.
Scope of Responsibilities
Research + Briefing
As a new staff position within the Guild, it will be essential to research and map all initiatives, programs, events, stakeholders and timelines pertaining to the Guild's current sustainability work so that there is one centralized repository of all efforts and commitments. At present, all work product and relationships have principally been led by member volunteers serving as ambassadors between the Guild and a variety of external stakeholders. Once the Guild's current landscape has been mapped, the Director of Sustainability and Engagement will provide a briefing document for Guild leadership outlining their analysis of potential opportunities and / or gaps in current efforts.
Communications
This initial briefing document will form the basis for working with Guild leadership to develop a strategic communications plan for clearly articulating to a variety of audiences (i.e., PGA members, press, Guild leadership, stakeholder collaborators) talking points about key sustainability challenges from the Guild's perspective and the solutions-based practices for which the Guild is advocating adoption. The Director will work with Guild leadership and our outside PR firm on strengthening and diversifying its bench of PGA-trained producer ambassadors.
Engagement + Program Development
Keeping in mind the overall mission of the Guild and the lens through which the Guild focuses on issues of sustainability, the Director will identify potential tools, products and programs to pilot in an effort to simultaneously broaden and deepen engagement by its members. Successful efforts may be further developed and funding raised so that they may be taken to scale for the entire membership and industry at large. The goal will be to identify both strategic opportunities with stakeholder partners and Guild-facing initiatives. Key to both efforts will be identifying metrics to enable Guild leadership to better understand where its efforts have the most impactful outcomes so that it can focus its resources and stakeholder relationships accordingly.
Specifically, the Director of Sustainability and Engagement will:
- Serve as the central point of contact both within the organization and to external stakeholders on the Guild's sustainability work, thereby creating a unified programmatic and communications strategy for this work through the lens of producers and producing teams. (*)
- Understand the business challenges for producers and their teams in making their productions more sustainable.
- Maintain, build and nurture lasting partnerships with key stakeholders.
- Ensure that all PGA programs and events, as well as any official collaborative programs and events, adhere to the Guild's policies for producing events with sustainable best practices.
- Work closely with Guild leadership in the development of a strategic plan and roadmap for the Guild's sustainability work, including development of any metrics for charting engagement and outcomes.
- Convene stakeholder meetings such as the Inter-Guild Sustainability Alliance and others.
- Work collaboratively with various PGA departments, including: Programs and Events on member-facing and/or public programs, events and trainings; Legal on contracts and reporting; Executive Office on strategic planning, communications, fundraising and internal and external stakeholder engagement.
- Manage external contractors and vendor relationships, as needed.
(*) In addition to PGA's own membership of producers and producing team members, key stakeholder constituencies include: government officials, guilds and unions, NGOs and non-profit organizations, philanthropists/philanthropic institutions, studios and other entertainment industry companies, and universities.
Qualifications of a Successful Candidate
A successful candidate will have a mixture of the following skills and attributes:
- A minimum of 5-7 years of relevant experience in sustainability or environmental programs, impacts, and topic areas (e.g., public policy, communications, ESG, media, BA or MA/MS degree in relevant fields)
- A successful track record in multi-party stakeholder relationship management and communications. You must be adept at complex coalition-building with demonstrated experience in this area.
- Diplomacy, including an ability to navigate competing interests.
- Skilled in cultural competence with a facility for understanding and discussing the complexities and intersectional nature of how issues of sustainability impact vulnerable populations.
- A network of relationships in the entertainment industry.
- A track record of creating campaigns, programming, trainings, events or other platforms for engagement around issues of sustainability.
- Excellent project management skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Proven leadership, prioritization, and analytical skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills. You will need to communicate with clarity and comfort to a variety of audiences and constituencies, including those within the Guild, external partners and stakeholders and others in the industry. Public speaking experience is a plus.
- You must be a team player as well as a problem solver.
Helpful, but not mandatory:
- Experience managing grants and sponsorships - from application/pitch development, through elements of writing proposals and reports to managing budgets.
- An understanding of the entertainment industry/producing
- Prior experience working with a nonprofit organization or trade association.
