Technical Writer, Tools USD (Core)
Job Summary:
Our Software R&D department (Tools) is responsible for developing Pixar's in-house and open source software. We work very closely with both artists and engineers to build innovative filmmaking tools that enable our film production and continuously extend artistic reach.
The Universal Scene Description (USD) Team is looking for an experienced technical writer to author developer (API) and end user documentation, as well as to aid in writing formal specifications for aspects of our open source software, including OpenSubdiv, USD, and Hydra. In this position, you will have the opportunity to closely collaborate with engineering staff and strategic industry partners to create technical documentation for use by developers and 3D content creators.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Show initiative and work independently on developer (API) and user documentation, including tutorials, for Pixar's software, with a focus on the OpenSource USD, Hydra, and OpenSubdiv components
• Create and maintain release and patch notes for software releases
• Monitor and respond to community discussion on documentation that is missing or needing clarification/development
• Design and maintain web-accessible documentation for our OpenSource products
• Working closely with the engineering teams to design and implement a strategy for formally specifying selected aspects of our software
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Excellent writing, communication and diplomacy skills
• Web publishing experience, including expertise with writing and designing static web pages
• Experience documenting complex software applications in a C++ development environment, particularly developer (API) documentation
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, and an attention to detail
• Ability to listen well, and communicate clearly
• Ability to evaluate, prioritize, and make forward progress on multiple projects
• Desire to work in a collaborative and diverse environment where you collaborate with accomplished technicians and world-class technical artists
OTHER VALUABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience with documentation generation/extraction systems such as Doxygen and Sphinx
• Basic Linux knowledge
• Prior exposure to reading and/or writing formal specifications
• Experience using Python or other scripting languages for documentation generation
• Experience using and/or documenting 3D graphics applications (e.g., Maya)
