Supervising Planning Editor & Scheduler, Morning Edition
Morning Edition is NPR’s influential, agenda-setting morning news magazine (show program). As Supervising Planning Editor & Scheduler, you will have critical responsibility to have essential knowledge, skills and abilities to lead our hosts, producers and editors in long-form, long-range stories while driving the editorial vision for the show. You will lead teams on breaking news coverage of events in the U.S. and around the world, and ensure that the show is at the leading edge of the conversation across a range of issues & headline stories. You will demonstrate high-level decision-making with critical assignments with top-talented hosts, producers and editors as needed. As the supervisor overseeing the schedule, you will ensure that all shifts are staffed appropriately and resources spread efficiently across a 24-hour show cycle. Lastly, this role will develop and implement the overarching vision for news, features and digital content for the show. This position in based in Washington DC and works varied shifts.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Leads hosts and producers in developing story ideas, editing audio and producing news reports, features and special projects.
• Orchestrate breaking news plans.
• Lead editorial meetings, encouraging staffers to pitch and execute great story ideas.
• Ability to work with hosts and producers to determine strategic & proper approaches to stories, subjects to be discussed and individuals to be interviewed.
• Ability to track ongoing flow of news and recommends specific stories and areas of coverage.
• Ensures that all material aired meets NPR programs’ standards and practices, including standards of fairness, objectivity and balance.
• Participate in budgetary reviews and hiring process for Morning Edition.
• Assists with coordinating Morning Edition’s coverage with desk editors and other NPR departments.
• Collaborate with digital news to maximize show content across all platforms.
• Ability to manage performance; providing proactive coaching, constructive feedback and career development training.
• Ability to organize, write and maintain staff schedules strategically; by producing appropriate shift rotations and coordinated production & editorial timetables to meet the Morning Edition team and show goals. Communicate future schedules at least a month in advance.
• Ability to track past shift rotations as well as future planning of rotations for show specific initiatives or projects to include forward thinking on how to schedule staff development and training of new positions.
• Accept and schedule vacation, comp and sick requests and respond in a timely manner along with recruiting temporary staff for vacation and project backfill.
• Supervises staff as assigned by the Executive Producer.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
REQUIRED SKILLS
• A minimum of 3 years previous managerial experience.
• 8 years’ experience as a news reporter, news producer, or news editor.
• Thorough knowledge of news and feature reporting techniques and demonstrated writing ability.
• Proven skill in both news and feature editing is required.
• Considerable knowledge of current events, including international and domestic news.
• Proven experience working in an urgent daily deadline environment.
• Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness.
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts, including rotating overnight and/or swing shifts.
PREFERRED SKILLS
• Previous experience editing and working with hosts and producers.
• Experience working in/or knowledge of public radio and the public radio system.
