NPR has one of the most loyal audiences of any news organization. We often hear how much people “love” NPR, and the evidence of that is in the number of individuals who support us through donations to their local station.
Building on the work NPR has already done to create loyal listeners and viewers, the new position of Supervising Community Manager will help NPR move our organization in the direction of deeper, more meaningful interactions with our audience.
The Supervising Community Manager will help create the vision and operational strategy for building NPR communities. The Supervising Community Manager will accomplish this by leading the ideation process with stakeholders, and leading implementation with social, live events, and marketing teams; utilizing both on and off-line tools and techniques to create communication pathways between NPR and its audience, as well as for the audience to use with each other. The goal is to foster authentic connections and conversations that can help inform the work of NPR and enrich the lives of our community.
The Supervising Community Manager will report to the Director of Digital Content and Senior Supervising Editor for Engagement and the Programming leads to accomplish this work.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Working under the guidance of the Director of Digital Content and Senior Supervising Editor for Engagement set NPR’s community guidelines.
• Define and strategize how to grow NPR communities that enhance our mission to serve the public through our various content programming efforts
• Identify platforms for community engagement
• Works with shows, desks, and verticals on projects to develop community.
• Supervise 1 to 5 people working on community building.
• Produce community management guidelines and documentation.
• Teach reporters, producers, editors and member stations how to become active participants in NPR branded communities.
• Provide training for staff on best practices for communities.
• Works closely with Digital Media and NPR Visuals teams to identify and develop product needs for NPR communities.
• Initiate discussions and get community members talking by maintaining a consistent monthly content calendar
• Encourage networking among the community. Become a place they can come to meet and talk.
• Manage information and data coming back from community from questions asked to stories shared.
• Occasionally represents NPR at industry workshops/conferences, station visits and in press interviews about NPR’s communities.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelor’s degree preferably in journalism, English, or writing-intensive discipline and/or equivalent work experience.
REQUIRED SKILLS
• At least five years of experience managing a digital community for a national media brand.
• At least five years of experience in daily journalism (digital, print and/or broadcast)
• At least two years’ experience with managing branded social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)
• Experience supervising a team
• Experience monitoring, extracting insights from and developing strategy using digital analytics such as Chartbeat, Omniture, Google Analytics and Facebook Insights
• Demonstrated skills in writing and editing
• Highly organized
• Solid, independent news judgment
• Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure
• Strong understanding of journalistic ethics. Experience maintaining high journalistic ethics and standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance, and fairness.
• Experience with intellectual property issues involved in publications generally and Web publications in particular
• Strong oral communication skills
• Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions
• Ability to work independently and to effectively build, manage, and collaborate with a team
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts as needed, including early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays. Some holiday shifts will be required
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public media system
• Ability and willingness to travel
• Ability to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. This position is a union position with SAG-AFTRA. Severance provisions of the SAG-AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.
PREFERRED SKILLS
• Experience working in a large news organization with affiliated newsrooms
• Experience with creating social media visuals, including video and gifs
• Experience reporting, writing and/or editing
