Full Time Unpaid Internship
The Digital Media Design Group researches, prototypes, and designs user experiences for the public across the places they are and will be—websites, smartphones, tablets, connected cars, connected homes, wearables, smart speakers and places we haven't yet imagined.
As our Mobile Product Designer Intern, you will be embedded as a designer on our mobile product team, working on new features and enhancements for NPR One and the relaunched NPR News app for iOS and/or Android. You’ll be responsible for end-to-end design solutions to complex user needs, from wireframing and prototyping through final interface and interaction design.
You are an ideal candidate if you have direct experience designing mobile apps for iOS and/or Android, and are comfortable translating your designs into functional code. You’re a designer who can bridge “design” and “implementation” and prototype and design in native code, working closely with both the design and mobile development teams. You should be comfortable or familiar with a wide range of commercial design tools (e.g. Sketch, Adobe Creative Cloud, After Effects, InVision, etc.) and should feel right at home in Xcode and/or Android Studio. You should have a good understanding or a curiosity to learn more about various platforms and technologies (HTML/CSS/Javascript, Objective-C, Swift, Java, Kotlin, etc.) to create functional tools, prototypes and proofs-of-concept. You should be equally proficient in thinking about user experiences from a product design and development point of view.
In this role, you will..
• Design enhancements and new features for the NPR One and NPR News mobile apps.
• Iterate and improve the design of our current mobile apps directly in code
• Prototype and test new user experiences in native code.
• Work with the design and mobile development teams to test and expand our mobile design systems to improve adaptiveness
• Work with the design and mobile development teams to identify opportunities for aligning design and development workflows.
• Experiment with motion design to bring delightful details to your designs and prototypes
• Partner with the Design Technologist Intern to define and maintain in-house design tools and processes that help designers work more efficiently with developers.
