OVERVIEW
Morning Edition is looking for a resilient journalist who is quick on an audio multitrack, enjoys coaching producers and describes themselves as a problem-solver.
As the Senior Producer, you will work collaboratively with the supervising producer to lead an overnight production team that brings the live Morning Edition radio show to air and Up First to podcast feeds.
Millions of listeners depend on Morning Edition and Up First to start their day. We deliver the latest national and international stories paired with analysis to put headlines into context. The show also features culture stories about music, movies and books that bring joy and provoke thoughtful conversations.
The right candidate for this position is committed to daily news, and is eager to deliver the freshest, most important stories to listeners. They put the needs and wants of audiences first.
This is an overnight position that starts at 11 p.m. Eastern Time and is expected to be worked on site at NPR’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. Morning Edition is a 24/6 news operation. Staff are expected to work holidays and will be asked to temporarily change their work schedule to cover other show shifts and special assignments as needed. This is a union represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Works with the show line editors and / or managers to make the best editorial and production decisions and plans for the show, podcast and team.
• Delegates production assignments to staff and edits their work.
• Trains and coaches show producers and editors.
• Writes copy and produces audio, as needed, for the show, podcast or other platforms.
• Plays a role in shaping editorial standards for the show by participating in conversations and initiatives around diversity, inclusion and equity
• Books, scripts and produces show segments as assigned
• Travels with show hosts, producers, editors and/or reports to produce stories from the field and execute live broadcasts of the show from remote locations, as needed
• Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Mastery in audio production techniques that include using ambient or natural sound, music and archive tape to produce news and audio stories.
• At least four years of experience producing daily news content for a national or international news organization.
• Experience assigning staff, especially under deadline pressure.
• Experience in editing other people’s work, especially production work.
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating, at all times, respect for the diversity of ideas and constituencies
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience producing live or breaking news coverage for a broadcast platform or similar
• At least one year of experience in an editorial decision-making position in a newsroom.
• Well-developed curiosity in a wide range of subjects.
• Proficiency in another language other than English.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience
WORK LOCATION
• On-site: This is an on-site role based in Washington, DC .
REQUIRED SKILLS
• Advanced proficiency in meeting hard deadlines and managing time time efficiently
• Intermediate proficiency in AP style writing.
• Ability to adapt and accommodate differing styles of editorial workflows and communication.
• Ability to negotiate and compromise.
• Professional communication skills when working with staff and when representing the NPR organization.
JOB TYPE
• This is a full time, exempt position.
COMPENSATION
The U.S. based anticipated salary rate for this opportunity is annualized at $122,500 plus benefits. This rate displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salary NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.
