Role Summary
The Production/Editorial Assistant assists in producing program material for reporters, hosts, producers/editors and other contributors for Morning Edition. He/She assists in generating story and interview ideas, conducts research, assists in arranging interviews, writes copy for hosts.
Must be available to rotate into a variety of shifts, including overnight, swing and dayside. Content for digital and social media is an integral part of NPR's product, and the selected candidate will be expected to contribute material for all platforms.
Responsibilities:
• Edits audio for air
• Prepares scripts and other materials as required
• Assists in producing program material for reporters, hosts, producers/editors, and others in studios and on location
• Builds sub-sections of program by editing, scripting and linking two or more related pieces, music and other elements
• Works with reporters, editors and producers to arrange related elements to complete or supplement a piece
• Goes on location (solo, or with reporters or hosts) and prepares/files material for air/publication
• Generates story and interview ideas
• Stays current with major stories and regularly pitches ideas for interviews and pieces
• Conducts research and assists in arranging interviews, by booking guests and handling associated logistics
• Pre-interviews guests and prepares research material for hosts
• Gathers news, and interacts with audience (as necessary and assigned), through relevant social media platforms
• Writes news and program copy
• Drafts host copy, including but not limited to, intros, opens and returns, tape and copy elements, connective copy between elements
• May be given assignments on different platforms, such as multimedia production, including writing Web text, producing interactive material and multimedia content
• Ability and willingness to regularly work a variety of shifts, including Swing, overnight, or dayshifts
• Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
Required Skills:
• At least one-year experience in broadcasting
• At least one-year experience in news journalism
• Ability to edit audio on digital editing systems
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts
• Ability to coordinate and collaborate efficiently with hosts and Morning Edition colleagues across locations.
• Ability to collect, organize and disseminate information effectively, especially across shifts through standard show workflow and protocols
• Strong research skills across legacy and new media data sources
• Demonstrated writing ability with an emphasis on clarity, economy of phrase and a strong grasp of the rules of grammar
• Demonstrated ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure. Ability to handle more than one assignment at a time; ability to prioritize, anticipate and communicate effectively
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system
• Ability and willingness to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer
Preferred Skills:
• Experience in radio broadcasting.
• Experience producing in and operating digital audio self-op facilities
• Digital media skills, including proficiency in social media as a tool for topic research, news-gathering and audience interaction
