Production Assistant, Ask Me Another (Temporary-5 months)
Overview:
Assists in planning and producing material for Ask Me Another (AMA), an hour-long program featuring puzzles, word games, and trivia played with a live audience. Interviews and coordinates contestants for each week’s taping. Content for digital media is an integral part of NPR's product and employee will be expected to produce audio and digital material. Responsible for producing and publishing digital copy for weekly build-outs. Serve as logistical coordinator for road shows. Shows interest and the ability to work with NPR’s Online Production team. Edits audio of live show, games and interviews, with quick turnaround. Part of live event production.
Essential Duties:
• Participates in the live-to-tape recordings of Ask Me Another (AMA), ensuring that the show adheres to NPR’s standards of radio production; and helps to coordinate and implement all communication between the Supervising Senior Producer and the show’s contestants and guests.
• Lead in performing screenings and pre-interviews of potential contestants
• Lead in booking contestants for every episode of AMA, with a mind towards diversity of contestant skill sets, race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, crowd comfortability, and interests.
• Help generate ideas for Mystery Guests, experts, and celebrity guests
• Coordinates the logistics of getting contestants and guests to venue in a timely manner.
• Coordinates the smooth transition of contestants on and off the stage during the live production of the show and other assignments as needed to aid the production of the live recording.
• Edits segments of the show using ProTools each week on a quick production schedule, as needed, with guidance from the Supervising Senior Producer.
• Plans program elements to be produced by AMA contributors and staff.
• Prepares scripts and other materials as required.
• Writes, records and mixes station promos when necessary.
• Supervises content, quality and production of program segments to ensure consistency with NPR formats and standards.
• Aids in the event logistics for live recording events in Brooklyn, as well as remote recordings around the country. This includes transportation, food, lodging, comp tickets, and run of show issues.
• Help to monitor finished programs for errors before it’s distributed to stations for broadcast.
• Writes program and web copy.
• Drafts copy for host interviews and features.
• Writes transitional copy as well as promos.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
Required:
• Ability to edit audio, preferably in ProTools.
• Experience fact checking, with ability to collect, organize and disseminate information.
• Thorough knowledge of research tools, including computer access data banks.
• Demonstrated ability to write clearly and concisely, yet with the ability to maintain the tone of the show.
• Demonstrated ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure.
• Ability to handle more than one assignment at a time; ability to prioritize, anticipate and communicate effectively.
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
• Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and to resolve conflicts in a professional manner.
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating, at all times, respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
• Ability and willingness to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.
• Strong/expert organization, scheduling
Preferred:
• Experience in radio broadcasting.
• Experience in live event production.
• Experience producing in and operating digital audio self-op facilities.
• Experience in comedy writing, interest in pop culture is a bonus.
• Interest in developing new segment ideas to showcase our show’s strengths in new/innovative ways
