Full Time Job
Morning Edition is looking for an entry-level journalist to join its team as an Editorial Assistant. The Editorial Assistant is a liaison between NPR’s morning flagship program and local stations. He/she maintains clear communications to stations during the live show, notifying about updates and changes. The Editorial Assistant supports the shows line and updates team throughout the daily live broadcast. The ideal candidate has a strong social media skillset and will maintain the show’s online platforms. He/she works under the direct supervision of the Morning Edition leadership team.
Responsibilities:
• Edit and promote segment information.
• Effectively communicate show updates and changes including during breaking news situations.
• Maintain and curate Morning Edition and Up First social properties on a daily basis.
• Craft social engagement strategies around special projects, newsmaker interviews and field work.
• Works in close coordination with All Things Considered to coordinate social media content across shows.
• Assists daily show guests.
• Highlights key Morning Edition content for network.
• Edits tape and related continuity, with editorial assistance.
• Supports show’s Line and Updates Teams.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, with training in library sciences, journalism, and/or research preferred.
Required Skills:
• Ability to work efficiently on prescribed tasks with minimal supervision, often under deadline pressure
• Effective communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to communicate complex messages clearly and succinctly, especially in context of station communications
• Appreciation for the value of the station-national network relationship
• Excellent organizational skills – ability to juggle multiple work streams and prioritize tasks.
• Keen interest in and passion for news and audio journalism
• Ability to communicate complex messages clearly and succinctly, especially in context of station communications
• Appreciation for the value of the station-national network relationship
• Familiarity with navigating a variety of content management systems
• Ability to craft a comprehensive, cross-platform social strategy
• Oriented toward taking action and seeking resolution in a self-motivated way.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including the ability to handle difficult problems and interact with confidence and tact.
• Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness.
• Active engagement in pitching stories for coverage as pieces or host conversations
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
• Ability to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.
Preferred Skills:
• Experience with digital and multimedia production.
• Experience booking and writing briefs on newsmakers
• Demonstrated understanding of, and familiarity with, social media platforms.
• Experience working in and/or knowledge of public radio and the public radio system.
