National Public Media (NPM) – the sponsorship subsidiary of NPR, owned in partnership with PBS and WGBH – serves as the exclusive sales organization for all NPR network programs, and regional offerings on public media stations, seeks a Director, Sponsorship Marketing to help lead a fast-paced, multi-faceted marketing team committed to supporting the future of public media.
A thriving, mission-driven multimedia organization, NPR has been a leader in audio journalism for nearly 50 years. With 120 million monthly listeners, NPR delivers award-winning programming on the radio, via podcasts, online, through live events and on emerging platforms like smart speakers and the NPR One app.
NPM’s Marketing team provides strategic support to the organization’s sponsorship teams in a dynamic and demanding media environment through the execution of B2B marketing strategies designed to build awareness, understanding and consideration of NPR sponsorship in market. Led by the Vice President, Sponsorship Marketing, the Marketing department is a fast-paced and growing team with creative drive and collaborative spirits that supports NPM’s aggressive revenue goals.
As a senior leader in the department, the Director, Sponsorship Marketing directly supports the Vice President, Sponsorship Marketing in developing department goals and strategy and managing department operations, while leading a team of associates in the execution of paid, owned and earned media strategies. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10 years of experience in fast-paced sales, agency or media organizations and experience distilling complex ideas into simple, clear briefs that inform positioning, creative development and activation.
This position reports to the Vice President, Sponsorship Marketing.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Work closely the Vice President, Sponsorship Marketing and NPM Leadership to develop, implement and evaluate overall marketing strategy for National Public Media.
• Support Vice President, Sponsorship Marketing in building an efficient, collaborative work environment in the Marketing department with the goal of facilitating communication, inspiring creativity, championing comradery and motivating staff to do their best work.
• Build and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders at NPR, Member stations, and within NPM in order to explore, define and expand positioning for public media sponsorship opportunities.
• With support from marketing associates, lead the development, implementation and evaluation of NPM’s strategic mix of earned, owned, and paid outreach – for network and regional sales – focused on raising awareness about public media sponsorship opportunities; establishing NPR / NPM leadership as industry thought leaders; increasing qualified, inbound sales prospects; and establishing NPR as a must-buy media property.
• Mine research and industry data to develop network and regional sales positioning arguments and messaging clearly articulating NPR’s distinct value proposition in the audio landscape – specifically relating to podcasting and voice-activated devices – that defines earned, owned and paid marketing efforts.
• Identify opportunities for new research on target audience of marketers/advertisers, anticipating trends, and thinking creatively about new ways to understand the audience and meaningfully connect
• Set creative direction for NPM, working with content producers, creatives and planners to bring ideas laid out in briefs to life and oversees asset development inclusive of promotional materials, website content, paid media creative, and other marketing-related projects.
• Build and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders at NPR, Member stations, and within NPM in order to explore, define and expand positioning for public media sponsorship opportunities.
• Challenge conventions and legacy ways of doing things; anticipate trends in marketplace; generate and implement new ideas and solutions. Successfully sell through strategies and ideas to senior leadership at NPM and NPR
• Manage and streamline reporting on earned, owned and paid media efforts, with a focus on evaluating best practices, optimization, and identifying areas for growth and experimentation.
• Contribute to the development of creative strategy for paid marketing efforts with a focus on clearly articulating NPR’s unique value proposition.
• Develop external thought leadership presentations inclusive of positioning, scripts, and visual assets.
• Oversee and provide direction to Senior Marketing and Communications Associate in the development of earned media through press outreach, industry event speaking engagements, award submissions, original content and other tactics.
• Manage project budgets with responsibility for determining most cost-effective production processes.
• Represent National Public Media at sponsored industry events and earned thought leadership opportunities.
• Distill complex ideas into simple, clear briefs that inform positioning, creative development and activation for the department
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree
REQUIRED SKILLS
In this fast-paced media environment, we value agility, assertiveness, and analytical and creative-thinking skills. The ideal candidate has an aptitude for learning and a demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative environment. Specific qualifications outlined below:
• Minimum of 10 years of specific experience in marketing, advertising, digital audio, or media
• Prior experience in media, agency, PR or branding environments preferred or clear explanation of relevant experience
• Prior experience managing a cross-functional team
• Strong verbal and written abilities, including demonstrated capacity to write and copy edit for a variety of formats/platforms
• Strong creative sensibilities and ability to lead creative development
• Ability to effectively build and maintain relationships with people at all levels of an organization, across a diverse range of cultural, generational, ethnic, racial, educational and social backgrounds
• Superior PowerPoint and Salesforce skills are a must
• Experience designing and/or analyzing quantitative and qualitative research
• Ideal candidate is ambitious, curious, kind and brings integrity to the role
• Positive, self-starter attitude
• Ideal candidate has a strong sensibility for business decision-making/business strategy
• Prior experience with audio, digital audio and/or podcasts preferred
• Affinity for public media and/or purpose-driven brands preferred
• Prior experience building/managing executive profiles is a plus
• Experience working with Pardot, Wordpress, SEO, Google Analytics, Adobe Creative Suite, Moat and research databases like GfK MRI and comScore is a plus
• Experience with event activation and strategy is a plus
