Full Time Job
Initiates, plans and produces program material for WATC. The Assistant Producer writes news and program copy, including drafts of hosts’ leads and other production copy, and edits audio for the on-air production of NPR programs. In this role, the Assistant Producer will help plan and assign weekly and long-term coverage and program packages. Also contributes digital and social media content. This is a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment where quality journalism comes first.
Responsibilities:
• Consistent proficiency editing and mixing audio under tight deadline pressures
• Demonstrated ability to write clear and concise radio copy
• Initiates, plans and produces program material for both daily and future broadcasts
• Writes and edits news and program copy, including drafts of hosts’ leads and other production copy
• Work as an off-air reporter to shape story ideas
• Work in the field with hosts as assigned
• Works various shifts, as assigned
• Performs other duties as assigned, including the possibility of newsroom rotations to support other NPR news magazines, newscast unit, news gathering desks, programming or other editorial teams as required.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in demonstrating a proven interest in journalism.
Required Skills:
• At least three years of radio production experience on broadcast digital audio workstations (ie MTE/DAVID, Dalet, ProTools or similar)
• At least one year of experience in editorial decision-making
• Strong communication skills, both written and oral
• Demonstrated ability to assimilate and organize large amounts of information
• Familiarity with a range of subject areas such as world news, politics, business, science, and arts
• Experience working in and filing from the field
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system
• Understanding of journalistic ethics
• Ability to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer
Preferred Skills:
• Strong sense of shaping big ideas
• Experience in live broadcasting
• Digital media skills
