Position Summary: Nexstar Broadcasting's station, KDVR/KWGN in Denver, Colorado, seeks a news reporter that specializes in covering politics and news developing out of the State Capitol. This position is responsible to originate research, write, and produce stories and report live. This position will cover politics at the State Capitol, cover local and national political stories, provide stories to Nexstar stations in Denver, Colorado Springs, Grand Junction, as well as cover general news, breaking news, and weather when required or assigned.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
• Must have a significant interest in Colorado politics
• Reports political/State Capitol news stories for broadcast, describing the background and details of events and especially their impact on the community.
• Strong storytelling skills and creative live shots in the field are a must
• Build a network of sources that will enable you to break news and keep the company ahead of its competitors
• Pitches stories to news managers and news producers which are relevant to the local community, with good characters who are NOT lawmakers whenever possible
• You should have an extensive background in finding good stories, even if they aren't political or originating at the State Capitol
• In the event of breaking news and weather, you should be ready to jump into coverage of the BIG Story
• When there are no major Capitol/political stories, or ''day-of'' news requires it, you should be ready to be assigned to GA reporting.
• Receives assignments and evaluates leads and tips to develop story ideas.
• Is up to date with political news here in Colorado, around the nation, and Washington D.C.
• Ability to work well with people in a high-pressure atmosphere
• Ideal candidates must be self-starters, hard workers, have great attitudes, be versatile, and efficient
• Gathers information about events through research, interviews, experience or attendance at political, news, sports, artistic, social or other functions.
• Discusses issues with producers and/or news managers to establish priorities or positions.
• Checks reference materials such as books, news files or public records to obtain relevant facts.
• Revises work to meet editorial approval or to fit time requirements.
• Produces and presents reports for all platforms.
• Ensures that all content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality.
• Writes stories for the web and other eMedia platforms.
• Interacts with viewers/users on social media sites.
Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.
Requirements & Skills:
• Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.
• Fluency in English.
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
• Minimum three years' experience in news reporting. (More or less depending on market size.)
• At least two years of political/state government reporting
• Superior on-air presence.
• Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipment.
• Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Valid driver's license with a good driving record.
• Flexibility to work any shift.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
The News Reporter must be able to sit, conduct telephone conversations, use electronic mail, write letters and memos, conduct face-to-face discussions with individuals or groups, make decisions without supervision, make decisions that impact the results of co-workers, work in close proximity to others, work outdoors occasionally in all weather conditions, and work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. In addition, the News Reporter must be able to lift, set up and operate equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, and be able to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls. Repetitive movements are required. Work may be conducted in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions.
