Job Summary
The New York Yankees Performance Science department is accepting applications for an Applied Sport Biomechanist. Reporting to the department Director, this individual will be responsible for conducting biomechanical research to inform the development and/or evaluation of athletes.
Primary Responsibilities
• Conduct research and athlete servicing under the direction of the Director, Performance Science
• Manage all aspects of projects from inception through to dissemination of findings with a particular focus on developing musculoskeletal models and signal processing routines
• Oversee and administer data collection using instrumentation such as optical motion capture, force plates, inertial measurement units, electromyography and dynamometry
• Maintain laboratory equipment and manage all aspects of the laboratory's functioning
• Manage and mentor lab personnel
• Interface with coaches, analysts and developers to compile data sets and provide direction on analyses
• Prepare and disseminate biomechanical reports and information to stakeholders in Baseball Operations
• Operate as the point of contact for industry contacts
• Remain abreast of technological advancements in biomechanical measurement
• Conduct reviews to summarize scientific literature
• Perform additional duties and assist with projects as assigned
Qualifications
and Experience:
• PhD in Biomechanics or Engineering (mechanical or biomedical)
• Minimum 5 years' experience collecting and analyzing motion capture data and be able to demonstrate a track record of peer-reviewed publications
• Strong proficiency in either in either Matlab or Python is required
• Demonstrated expertise developing biomechanical models-in accordance with scientific convention-to quantify kinematics, kinetics and muscle function
• Proven acute familiarity with motion capture hardware and software
• Strong presentation skills and ability to communicate technical information to a lay audience
• Adeptness calibrating, configuring and operating biomechanics lab hardware (eg, optical motion capture, force plates, IMUs, EMG, high-speed cameras, etc.)
• Adherence to ethical protocols when working with human subjects (including data protection)
• Knowledge of the theories, principles, practices, and techniques related to biomechanics
• Ability to review and critically evaluate scientific literature
• Experience working with coaches and athletes in elite sport is strongly preferred
• General familiarity with other sport science disciplines (eg, exercise physiology, strength and conditioning, skill acquisition, etc.) is desirable but not mandatory
• Strength of publication history in biomechanics will be considered
• Ability to design, implement and articulate research that would withstand peer-review in top tier journals
