Senior Counsel and Director of Business & Legal Affairs, Unscripted Original Series (EMEA)
THE OPPORTUNITY
With over 130 million subscribers enjoying great content in over 190 countries, it is an exciting time to work at Netflix. As our international efforts continue to grow, Netflix is excited to bring even more of our Unscripted Original series programming to our viewers in Europe, the Middle East, Africa (collectively, ''EMEA'') and around the globe.
Netflix seeks an experienced attorney to join its London office as a Senior Counsel on the Unscripted Original Series team -- the team behind series such as Queer Eye, Nailed It, Sugar Rush and My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman. The successful candidate will lead business & legal affairs related to the acquisition, development, and production of Netflix's original unscripted series, principally in countries in and around Europe, and will be an integral part of setting strategy for the global scaling of our original unscripted content. The Senior Counsel would focus his or her time negotiating the commercial terms for projects, negotiating and drafting the related legal agreements, and overseeing production-legal and clearance issues (with the support of internal resources). This executive will interface directly with third-party production companies, be involved in overseeing all facets of multiple third-party productions and will work closely with the US-based team.
REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate should have at least ten years of development and production experience in unscripted television and/or documentary programming, with direct experience negotiating and drafting all forms of agreements, including talent agreements, production services agreements and production forms (above-the-line and below-the-line). This role requires a strong legal and business negotiating/drafting background; a broad understanding of both television distribution (including digital distribution) and the evolving industry as a whole; and knowledge of substantive areas of the law relevant to unscripted series, such as defamation, fair use, copyright and privacy rights.
The successful candidate should also be extremely comfortable dealing directly with productions, as well as communicating across multiple departments within the company situated around the globe (including but not limited to operations, post-production, production finance, marketing, PR, etc.).
The successful candidate will also possess the following:
• Excellent leadership, supervisory, interpersonal and communication skills.
• Strong analytical capabilities and judgment.
• Ability to work proactively, independently, and reliably under tight timeframes in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to work effectively and collaboratively, think practically and be solution-oriented.
• Curiosity and willingness to tackle matters outside his or her area of expertise.
• Comfort and confidence making decisions, even when the rules are unclear and the issues are of first impression.
