THE OPPORTUNITY
With over 150 million paid subscribers enjoying great content in over 190 countries, it's an exciting time to work at Netflix. Our international efforts have brought Netflix to virtually all countries and as we bring even more of our Originals programming to our viewers around the globe, it's an exciting time to work at Netflix.
Our growing global Music Group, part of the Business & Legal Affairs Team, is looking for a new member to join the team: a Counsel, Soundtracks & Music Catalogue who shares our passion for music and the entertainment industry to help support our expanding exploitation of our music catalogue. Someone who seeks out and thrives in an environment where freedom and responsibility are a tenet, and passion, innovation and curiosity are mandates (https://jobs.netflix.com/culture). A stunning and selfless colleague for whom no task is too small or insurmountable.
The Music Group is based in Los Angeles, London and Berlin and is responsible for all of Netflix's global music business affairs, legal affairs and strategy, from the production and licensing of Netflix Originals through to the distribution of the Netflix service globally. This role is based in our Los Angeles office and reports to the Director, Music who leads the studio side of the Music Group.
The growth of Netflix's music repertoire presents more opportunities to use our music catalogue outside of our productions, whether in soundtrack albums, consumer products or other content. Netflix's music repertoire is derived from the production slates across all production teams, including Series, Film, Indie Film, Kids & Family, Documentaries, Comedy, Unscripted and International Originals, so in this role there will be broad visibility into all lines of our production business.
This unique and exciting role focuses on supporting those ancillary music opportunities by drafting contracts related to those uses such as distribution agreements, soundtrack album contracts, consumer products music contracts, music licenses, sheet music contracts and the like. This role will also handle the administrative functions associated with those contracts, including securing approvals (internally and externally) for artwork, packaging and sequencing, compiling project information and maintaining tracking systems, transmitting and communicating project details to distributors and other business partners, creating and providing deal summaries to key stakeholders (such as the Music Team, Participations and Finance), and negotiating commercial terms as needed.
This role will work closely with all members of the Music Group and should be extremely comfortable working independently and counseling internal and external business partners, making decisions that may have both legal and business impacts, and responding quickly and making quick decisions when faced with the exigencies of project production deadlines. They will have an innate ability to maintain organization and focus that fuels their effectiveness in successfully juggling multiple projects. The successful candidate will also thrive in an environment that places thoughtful efficiency over process yet have the ability to work with organizations or institutions who may not hold the same beliefs. This role presents unique opportunities to expand and grow beyond your immediate area of expertise, and to collaborate with colleagues in our domestic and international offices who share your passion for music, copyright and the entertainment industry.
This is an opportunity to be part of a public company with a great consumer brand and to help Netflix shape the future of entertainment.
REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate will have: 5 years of film/series music production experience or 5 years music administration experience related to the exploitation and distribution of film and series music, including immersion in structuring, negotiating and drafting soundtrack album contracts, digital distribution and other music distribution contracts, consumer products music contracts, and master use and synchronization licenses from a licensor perspective; thorough understanding of record royalty and mechanical royalty calculations in soundtrack album and record deals; comprehensive knowledge of the distribution process and ancillary exploitation process for music derived from film or series - from composer engagement through to music cue sheets and music asset administration; practical knowledge of the music and technology industries (including active relationships with music agents, managers, music publishers, digital distributors and record companies); and understanding of the evolving music distribution landscapes. International market experience is a plus. Experience providing in-house support in a film or television studio or production company is strongly preferred.
The successful candidate will also possess the following:
• J.D. and membership in good standing in at least one state bar.
• Exceptional drafting and project management skills.
• Clear, concise and effective communication skills.
• Highly-collaborative, with the ability to be fluid and respond positively to change and new ideas.
• Unparalleled organizational skills and an unwavering attention to detail.
• Strong analytical capabilities and judgment, even when the rules are unclear and the issues are of first impression.
• Ability to work proactively, independently and reliably under tight timeframes in a fast-paced environment.
• Resourceful and able to pivot quickly, think practically and be solution-oriented.
• Curiosity and eagerness to tackle additional projects as needed, including matters outside of your area of expertise.
• Tech-savvy, with a strong sense of how cloud-based document and database systems are used in a modern business environment.
