Counsel, Business & Legal Affairs, Spain / Portugal / Latin America
Netflix seeks a seasoned film and TV production and distribution attorney to help support and grow our Latin America (plus Spain and Portugal) licensing and production efforts.
The successful candidate will work as part of the company's Business & Legal Affairs team to structure, negotiate and draft agreements with independent and international studios and producers to acquire, produce and distribute content to Netflix subscribers throughout Latin America and around the world. The role will also require a strong team player who can work with internal teams on related intellectual property and other matters as they arise (e.g., copyright, trademark, publicity). The ideal candidate will also become a subject matter expert, delving into local law and practice in various international territories to learn and implement the legal and production customs necessary to develop and produce local content for Netflix's global digital streaming platform. The role requires creative thinking and good judgment, ease with exploring new transaction models, flexibility to quickly pivot within a strategy, and the comfort to counsel business partners, collaborate with global partners and independently make decisions that have both legal and business impact. The successful candidate will lead a small team of junior attorneys.
Equally important, the successful candidate is excited and inspired by the Netflix culture.
This position is based in Los Angeles.
REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate will have 10 years of business and legal affairs experience, including direct experience structuring, negotiating and drafting SVOD and/or pay or free television acquisition and distribution agreements (Latin America and/or Spain market experience required) as well as experience with both the legal and business affairs aspects of development and production, including negotiating talent agreements and production services agreements. Experience providing in-house support in a major studio, television network, production company and/or entertainment company is highly preferred. Fluency in English and Spanish is required; Portuguese a plus.
The successful candidate will also possess the following:
• Clear, concise communication skills.
• Strong analytical capabilities and superior judgment, even when the rules are unclear and the issues are of first impression.
• Ability to work proactively, independently and reliably under tight timeframes in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to counsel internal business clients on business and legal impact in various areas including content operations and security, marketing, business development, and product.
• Ability to pivot quickly and fluidly, think practically and be solution-oriented.
• Curiosity and willingness to tackle matters outside area of expertise.
