This candidate writes and edits primarily Culture & Exploration features tied to company tentpoles, big topics in the news, and special projects, with some daily quick-turnaround coverage. This writer must be able to identify unique angles on human-centered stories and add a new perspective to a conversation. They must write experientially to immerse users in our natural world. This writer must write fast, accurately, and boldly and exhibit a strong, yet flexible voice that connects emotionally with users. This person must have digital writing and editing experience, understand the fast-changing trends in the industry, and be highly motivated to use innovative, original journalism to grow our audience across various platforms. S/he is a self-starter who takes initiative in finding story ideas and sees them through from start to finish, including producing the story in our CMS. This candidate is also a team player, eager for feedback and to learn from their digital journalism colleagues and other departments such as Photography, Video, and Audience Development. S/he values quality journalism and strives to write stories as unique and thorough as possible given tight deadlines. The candidate is well versed in social media platforms and is interested in and open to using new technologies to get their work out there.
Responsibilities
• Write and edits stories to create unique experiences for Culture & Exploration Audience growth in Culture & Exploration.
• Contribute to strategies for increasing traffic, such as participating in headline discussions, monitoring Chartbeat, watching Analytics, etc.
• Increased discoverability in search and social.
• Tailor stories for specific platforms.
• Voice will speak to the appropriate audience and engage directly with the user.
Qualifications:
• BA with minimum 5-7 years of writing for a digital media outlet.
• Strong writing and interpersonal skills and self sufficiency.
• Ability to understand budgets.
• Proficiency in social media.
• Interest and experience in writing about people and our natural world.
• Self-initiative in pitching stories and taking direction from all members of the team.
